2009-2010 Fordham Season Preview

Dereck Whittenburg, a guy best known for throwing up an airball-turned-game-winning assist in the 1983 national championship game, has hoisted a different kind of airball in the Bronx.

Fordham’s program has back-slid considerably since Whittenburg piloted the Rams to 18 wins in 2006-07. Last season, the Rams finished with a 3-25 mark, the second-worst record in school history. Fordham was last in the A-10 in scoring, scoring defense, assists and second-to last in the entire nation in rebounding margin (only VMI was worse).

The program’s woes continued after the season as Fordham granted releases to sophomore Mike Moore – the team’s second-leading scorer (12.8 ppg) who transferred to Hofstra – and freshman
Trey Blue (8.2 ppg), who bolted to Illinois State.

However, Whittenburg denied the request by the Rams’ best player, point guard Jio Fontan, who wanted to jump ship, too. Fontan, who played for the Puerto Rican Under-19 team this summer, left his return to Fordham up in the air until July, when he announced he would return for his sophomore season.

Fontan led Fordham in scoring (15.3), assists (4.7) and minutes (34.6) last season, and was named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team. Backing him up at the point will be 6-2 senior Brenton Buder, a guy who is capable of scoring in double figures, but who missed most of last season with an ankle injury. Fontan will lead an extremely young team that includes a six-pack of recruits that Whittenburg believes can help get this program righted. The new faces include freshman forward Chris Gaston, who played at St. Anthony (N.J.) High School like Fontan, and Alberto Esrwick (7.1 ppg), and has star potential.

Lance Brown, a 6-3 freshman wing, and Danny Thompson, a 6-4 shooting guard, could help ease the losses of Moore and Blue, while Bosnian born forward Fahro Alihodzic adds much needed muscle to Whittenburg’s program.
