2009-2010 George Washington Season Preview

Even in our nation’s capitol, where fluctuating job approval ratings are an everyday occurrence, the fall of George Washington coach Karl Hobbs from hot property to squarely on the hot seat in two short years is astonishing.

Hobbs spoiled his constituents with a four year run during which his Colonials went 90-32, went to the postseason four years in a row – the last three to the NCAA Tournament – and won two Atlantic 10 titles. At that time, Hobbs’ name was on the radar of big-time programs, but he remained in Foggy Bottom and things rapidly hit rock bottom as the Colonials have gone a combined 19-35 over the past two seasons.

So, how did GW go from the A-10′s penthouse to the outhouse so quickly?

In short, Hobbs made some recruiting miscalculations, and the program became a bit of a revolving door as five players have left over the past 15 months. GW has some talented holdovers in 6-8 senior Damian Hollis and 6-1 sophomore Tony Taylor, but Rob Diggs, who led the Colonials in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots last season, is gone. So Hobbs is starting over a bit in 2009-10.

He’s got seven new faces on his bench – new assistant coach Brian Ellerbe (the head coach at the University of Michigan from 1997-2001) and six new recruits, including athletic wings Lasan Kromah and Bryan Bynes and some frontcourt size in center Daymon Warren and David Pellom.

GW backers will need to be patient again in 2009-10 as newbies get tons of playing time right off the bat and figure to experience lots of growing pains and likely, lots of A-10 losses.

Hobbs, though, has shown an ability to get teams where they need to be, so it wouldn’t be terribly shocking if the Colonials do an abrupt about-face and start winning again.
