2010-2011 George Washington Season Preview

A16-15 overall record and a postseason invite last March to the College Basketball Invitational – where the Colonials fell in Round One to eventual tourney winner Virginia Commonwealth – might not seem like reasons to celebrate, but they represented a serious step back toward respectability at George Washington. You see, things had really hit rock bottom in Foggy Bottom as the Colonials had fallen from one of the A-10′s blue-chip stocks, when they made three straight trips to the Big Dance in 200S, 2006 and 2007, to one of the league’s laughingstocks by finishing 9-18 in 2007-08 and 10-18 in 2008-09. But George Washington coach Karl Hobbs was able to right the ship a bit by instilling some of the attributes of those past NCAA Tourney teams – relentless pressure defense, terrific team athleticism, scoring balance, a willingness to share the ball- into last season’s squad. Twelve different players averaged at least 10 minutes, and nine got at least one start. And with four starters and several key subs back from last year’s 16-win team, the Colonials’ upward tick should continue in 2010-11. Sure, Hobbs’ squad swooned after an 11-3 start and the night-in, night-out double-figure scoring of smooth 6-8 forward Damian Hollis will be missed, but the Colonials are well-stocked on the perimeter with 6-S sophomore Lasan Kromah, S-11 junior point guard Tony Taylor and 6-S junior Aaron Ware all returning to fuel Hobbs’ trademark pressure defense. The athletic, long-armed Kromah is perfectly suited for GW’s go-go-go style of play and should blossom into an all-league performer sooner rather than later. Taylor made tremendous strides as a floor general last season, averaging more than four assists per game, and should join Kromah as double figure scorer this winter. And because Hobbs substitutes nearly as often as an NHL coach, there are lots of returnees with game experience, including 6-11 senior center Joseph Katuka, sophomore forward Dwayne Smith, sophomore guard Bryan Bynes, sophomore forward David Pellom and senior guard Travis King. If that isn’t enough options for Hobbs, Serbian-born freshman forward Nemanja Mikic is a 6-7, zone-busting shooter from behind the arc.
