2010-2011 Georgetown Season Preview

It was shortly after the Hoyas manhandled eventual national champion Duke on Jan. 30 to improve to 16-4 that the Final Four whispers started. Who would have predicted two months later that the season would leave a bitter taste because of a 7-7 finish down the stretch that included a first-round NCAA Tournament loss to 14th-seed Ohio? Now Georgetown is facing life after Greg Monroe, the sophomore center who left early and was taken as the seventh overall pick by the Detroit Pistons. But that may not necessarily be a bad thing. Monroe, for all of his wondrous talents, seemed to lack passion and energy at times. Finesse was more his game, too. Austin Freeman and Chris Wright, who return to form one of the top backcourts in the country, appear determined to make sure the same knocks don’t apply to the latest group of Hoyas.

Georgetown Backcourt

Despite being diagnosed with diabetes in March, Freeman missed only two games. Good thing for the Hoyas, since he led them in scoring (16.5 ppg), 3-point shooting (44-4 percent) and free throw shooting (85.6 percent). He and Wright, the team’s third-leading scorer at 15.2 ppg, combined for 1,061 points last year. But it’s not just a two-guard show, since 6-2 junior Jason Clark started every game last year, averaging 10.5 points, while shooting 42-4 percent from 3-point range. His long wingspan also helped him become one of the Hoyas’ top defenders. Those three figure to log most of the guard minutes – Freeman averaged 34.4, Wright 35.1 and Clark 33-4 per game last year, though there is some relief help. True freshman Markel Starks brings a scorer’s mentality to the point guard position. Reserve Vee Sanford will take on a larger role as a sophomore if he can fend off Starks’ bid as a backup. There’s more wing help with the arrival of 6-5 freshman Aaron Bowen, though he may need time before he’s ready to contribute. But all of them will battle for the scraps of minutes left over by Freeman, Wright and Clark.

Georgetown Frontcourt

So how will the Hoyas replace Monroe? Presumably, that means returning post starter Julian Vaughn, still a work in progress on offense, little-used reserves Henry Sims and Jerrelle Benimon and highly regarded freshman Nate Lubick will form the low-post rotation. Vaughn did shoot 57.6 percent last year, but was more of a complementary player. A lot more also is expected of the still-too-slender Sims, who has been in Monroe’s shadow for two years now. Lubick is viewed as a Jeff Green-type player, versatile, with a high basketball IQ. He will bid to start immediately. On the wing, Hollis Thompson is being counted on to make major strides off a quiet freshman season. He arrived with the hype to be an immediate impact player but didn’t seem to get comfortable until late in the season.

2010-2011 Georgetown Predictions

Thompson has the guards to play with anyone in the country. The key is getting the right mix in the low post, where Monroe left a major void. Lubick could be a major part of the solution; so could Vaughn and Sims if they show the expected improvement. But as the guards go, so go the Hoyas. That almost certainly means a return to the NCAA Tournament and a deeper run than last year. Georgetown Finish in the Big East: 5th
