2009-2010 Georgia Tech Season Preview

In the heels of a 12-19 season that left Georgia Tech basketball grumbling, Yellow Jackets coach Paul Hewitt turned a solid recruiting class into a consensus Top-10 haul, reeling in top-rated big man Derrick Favors and former Georgia commitment Daniel Miller.

While the six-member signing class can stand on its own talents, Hewitt’s biggest coup came in late June, when Gani Lawal pulled his name out of the NBA Draft. As an added bonus, D’Andre Bell was cleared to return following cervical spine surgery.

Suddenly, the Yellow Jackets look a lot more like an upper-tier ACC team than a squad that went 2-14 in conference play a year ago.

Georgia Tech Backcourt

There’s no shortage of experience here, especially at the point guard position where sophomore Iman Shumpert cut his teeth last season while sharing the ball-handling duties with Moe Miller.

Bell also has starting experience at the point, though his real strength is his defense, which was sorely missed last season when the Jackets yielded 71.5 points per game.

Heralded signee Mfon Udofia is another candidate to run the offense, and Hewitt said the muscular left-hander could find himself on the floor with any of the aforementioned point guards.

Beyond protecting the basketball, the key to the Yellow Jackets’ backcourt play will be their ability to knock down perimeter shoots. A plethora of frontcourt talent should provide plenty of looks, which places a premium on improved shooting by Shumpert, consistency from Moe Miller and an occasional lift from Lance Storrs off the bench.

No player in the ACC was more improved than Lawal, who more than doubled his freshman scoring and rebounding averages. Powerful and athletic at 6-9, Lawal led the ACC in double-doubles (15) and doublefigure rebound games (I8).

Coming off his most productive season as a scorer, senior Zachery Peacock gives the Jackets another wide-body in both the high and low post.

Still, the newcomers figure to be right in the thick of things, with Favors leading the way. Capable of dominating games in the paint, his arrival should negate the NBA defection of Alade Aminu and pull some attention away from Lawal. Kammeon Holsey, another heralded freshman, was expected to see immediate playing time, but a late-summer injury will force a redshirt.

Daniel Miller, a 6-11 player with soft hands and good footwork, could be the sleeper of the bunch. Immediate playing time may be harder to find for incoming small forward freshmen Brian Oliver and Glen Rice, Jr.

In a league suddenly flush with big men, Tech can also call on junior 7-footer Brad Sheehan to bang bodies and the boards down low.

2009-2010 Georgia Tech Predictions

It’s fitting that the Jackets will roll our throwback uniforms this season to commemorate three of the program’s most memorable teams – 1960, 1985 and 1990. Hewitt certainly has a burning desire to get his team back to that level, but the biggest challenge after consecutive losing seasons may be learning to win again.

With a renewed commitment to conditioning and defense, Georgia Tech hopes to reverse a troubling two-season trend as the Jackets were just 12-16 in games decided by five points or less.
