2010-2011 Hawaii Season Preview

Gib Arnold may have inherited the worst team in the league, but he doesn’t plan to stay in the cellar long. The rookie, coach spent his first 100 days out of his office assem~ling one of the best recruiting classes in the WAC. Arnold could promise playing time right away after the Rainbows lost most of their team to transfers or graduation. With only one starter back in senior guard Hiram Thompson, this season could definitely feature more hard times for the Rainbows, but a closer inspection also reveals good things. First of all, injured captain Bill Amis returns at forward. He missed all of last season with a foot injury suffered in an· exhibition game with Brigham Young-Hawaii. Had Amis played, the Rainbows might have won a half-dozen more games. Arnold also has University of Arizona transfer Zane Johnson, a 6-6 shooting guard, as a nice complement to Thompson. Johnson, a spot-up shooter, led the Wildcats in 3-point shooting percentage as a sophomore. Thompson returns as the Rainbows’ leading scorer and assist man, giving Arnold a solid starting point. From there, it gets a little dicey. Senior center Douglas Kurtz is back after a so-so junior season. Kurtz was suspended for the first six games because of an NCAA eligibility issue, then battled nagging injuries the rest of the way. That said, look for several members of the recruiting class to play from the opening tip. Chief among them is 6-10 sophomore center Vander J oaquim. Well traveled at the prep and collegiate levels, Joaquim was rated among the TOp-100 high school recruits nationally and is arguably the top newcomer in the WAC. Swing man Josten Thomas is another big-time sophomore, who, like J oaquim, played one season at junior college. Both should see significant minutes. Just a notch below them are freshman guard Bo Barnes of Westwind Prep Academy and sophomore forward Dominick Brumfield, who started his career at Missouri State. If Arnold can bring these varied pieces together quickly, then look out, the Rainbows could be a force in league play.
