2009-2010 Houston Season Preview

Houston expects a big season. The Cougars have a high-scoring tandem in Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis leading the way and – with Memphis ready to cede control of Conference USA – the next step could be the Cougars’ first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1992.

Coleman is a cold-blooded scorer who finished third in the league at 19.4 points per game. He also is a fine rebounder, averaging 8.2 per game to finish fourth in the league. Defenses can’t concentrate on him solely because of the presence of Lewis, who finished fourth in the league in scoring and was deadly from 3-point range, nailing 93 from behind the arc.

Point guard Zarnal Nixon played well as a passer and a scorer, but his forte is his unruffled hand running the offense. Forward Qa’rraan Calhoun will have an expanded role on the inside.

Houston will need to find a replacement for center Marcus Cousin’s production – 10.9 points and 8.4 rebounds per game – which might come in the form of Calhoun, who was one of four Cougars to average double-figures in scoring last year, Still, Houston is going to miss Cousin, an intimidator in the lane.

The Cougars have enough experience that the freshmen will be worked in slowly. Kirk Van Slyke, a 6-8 small forward, is highly skilled, while bruising power forward Kendrick Washington is an athletic rebounder. Nick Haywood is a blur of a point guard at 6-0, while Bryce Clark has some skills but must get stronger.

The Cougars were one of the better teams at hanging on to the basketball a year ago, averaging only 9.8 turnovers per game. They also forced a lot of turnovers with their plus -5.52 turnover margin, ranking No, 1 in Conference USA. The next-level move will require them to hit the boards, as Houston gave up 38.9 rebounds per game, last in C-USA.
