2009-2010 Indiana Season Preview

Tom Crean arrived at Indiana a year ago just trying to figure out what he had to work with.

Now, Crean will transition into what the Hoosiers are capable of after a season in which Indiana finished 1-17 in the Big Ten.

The Hoosiers have created a buzz around Bloomington and established a solid work ethic. Now, Crean’s focus shifts to installing a style of play that he hopes – with the addition of Jeremiah Rivers – pays dividends on both ends of the floor.

Indiana Backcourt

Crean has known since day one what he was getting with Rivers. But perhaps the biggest thing the Georgetown transfer brings is attitude. Rivers provides instant credibility defensively, a mindset Crean hopes permeates the rest of his lineup.

Offensively, Rivers knows how to create while reading any kind of defense, but the biggest improvement Crean has seen is Rivers’ ability to get to the rim while knowing what’s coming.

Crean will depend on Verdell Jones along with leading scorer Devan Dumes to provide stability. Talented incoming freshman Jordan Hulls will also be given the chance to contribute, along with fellow newcomer Maurice Creek, who provides another perimeter threat.

Indiana’s guards must get better at taking care of the basketball after the Hoosiers finished last in the Big Ten in turnovers a year ago. But solid guard play will also help transition the Hoosiers into the kind of running team Crean prided himself on at Marquette.

Indiana Frontcourt

At opposed to a year ago when Indiana was short on depth, the Hoosiers will have plenty of competition at a number of key positions.

Crean is building toward getting to the point where he has eight or nine players he feels comfortable starting. When he has several players battling for playing time rather than getting it through default, as was the case last season, Crean knows that’s when the improvement begins to take shape.

Crean will build around sophomore Tom Pritchard, who laid a solid foundation in the post as a freshman. Pritchard demonstrated the ability to play in both the high and low post, giving the Hoosiers a versatile performer.

Senior 7-0 center Tijan Jobe also factors into the post plan for Indiana, as do incoming freshmen Christian Watford and Bobby Capobianco, who will provide depth and size, which will help strengthen what was Indiana’s biggest weakness last season.

To that end, Crean wanes to change the mindset of his post players, making rebounding a priority. Crean expects his bigs to look for more opportunities to rebound offensively and defensively, which will speed up the process of creating the style of play he is hoping for.

2009-2010 Indiana Predictions

Crean’s job of rebuilding Indiana out of the ruins he inherited a year ago is far from over.

In a Big Ten gauntlet that could be as demanding as it has been in years, the Hoosiers need to begin to put the pieces together offensively and defensively. Then it becomes a matter of attitude and from the dedication Crean senses from his players, getting the Hoosiers to where he wants them to be isn’t as long a journey as many may think.
