2010-2011 Indiana State Season Preview

Indiana State’s basketball program was jolted by the repercussions of Dana Altman’s decision to leave Creighton. Sycamores coach Kevin McKenna decided in June that he’d rather assist his old boss in Oregon than run his own program in Terre Haute. His unexpected departure led Indiana State to promote Greg Lansing, who had spent the previous eight seasons as an assistant to Royce Waltman and McKenna. Lansing had a hand last season in helping the Sycamores to their most successful campaign in almost a decade. Indiana State posted its first winning season since 2001 by finishing 17-15, and the Sycamores tasted postseason play for the first time since 2001, playing in the College Basketball Invitational. It now becomes Lansing’s task to keep things moving forward. Whether he does could hinge on how quickly the Sycamores adjust to the departure of two of their top three scorers in Harry Marshall and Rashad Reed. Marshall, a second-team All-Valley pick, led the team in scoring and averaged a league-best 16.2 points in conference games. The streaky Reed averaged 9.8 points, while combining with Marshall for 59 of the team’s 177 steals. Starting center Brant Leitnaker and backup Josh Crawford also are gone, leaving the Sycamores needing to plug a potential gap in the middle. Forward Carl Richard is a rugged rebounder despite giving up size in the paint, and inconsistent Isiah Martin is the only other inside player with any significant experience. Dwayne Lathan showed flashes of brilliance but battled injuries throughout the conference season. He’s potentially the Sycamores’ best player, having averaged 12.7 points last season while shooting 49.1 percent from the field. Starter Jordan Printy and backup Aaron Carter can do damage from beyond the arc, and the Sycamores are hoping Jake Kelly is fully recovered from the knee injury that ended his season 28 minutes into Valley play. McKenna redshirted four freshmen, including 6-8 RJ Mahurin. He could get a chance to bolster the inside attack, as will incoming freshmen Myles Walker (6-8) and Jake Kitchell (6-9).
