2009-2010 Iowa State Season Preview

Greg McDermott starts this season with something he lacked in his first three seasons at Iowa State. Roster stability.

The Cyclones return nine players, including star big man Craig Brackins and two players who learned the system as redshirts last season.

McDermott has been juggling puzzle pieces since taking the job in 2006. Graduation losses and player defections seemed to have the Cyclones starting at ground zero each season.

Iowa State Backcourt

In order to get the most it can out of Brackins inside, the Cyclones need to develop a more consistent perimeter attack. Iowa State finished last in the Big 12 in 3-point percentage last season, making just 34.6 percent of its shots from beyond the arc.

The Cyclones did set a school record by making 236 3-point baskets (7.4 per game), with German import Lucca Staiger being the most productive outside shooter. Staiger made 74 3-point baskets and shot 38.5 percent from beyond the arc after sitting out the previous season because of an eligibility issue.

Distributing the basketball was Dianre Garren’s job, and he finished as one of the league’s top playmakers by averaging five assists per game. He also averaged 9.8 points but struggled shooting the ball, finishing at 40.7 percent overall and 22 percent from 3-point range.

Dominique Buckley and Charles Boozer saw action in backup roles, and the Cyclones expect three newcomers – Scott Christopherson, Chris Colvin and Marquis Gilstrap – to challenge for playing time. Christopherson is a transfer from Marquette, while Colvin was a Top 100 prospect by several recruiting services.

Gilstrap averaged 22.6 points and 10.1 rebounds at Gulf Coast Community College and was ranked as the nation’s 26th best overall prospect by ESPN. At 6-6, Gilstrap is the big guard McDermott has coveted.

Iowa State Frontcourt

Brackins, the fourth-leading returning scorer in the country, is Iowa State’s go-to guy. He became just the third player in school history to score at least 600 points and grab at least 300 rebounds in a season, finishing with averages of 20.2 points and 9.5 rebounds and recording 15 double-doubles.

As good as the 6-10 Brackins was last season, McDermott expects his star to be better.

Iowa State returns all but one of its big men, with the only loss being reserve Alex Thompson. Sophomore Justin Hamilton and senior Jamie Vanderbeken, at 6-11 the team’s tallest players, showed flashes of being solid players last season.

Vanderbeken led the team in 3-point accuracy, making 35 of his 86 attempts (40.7 percent), while Hamilton started 18 games in his freshman season.

Redshirt LA Pomlee, top recruit LaRon Dendy and Gilstrap also could be capable of making contributions up front.

2009-2010 Iowa State Predictions

Drastic improvement will be hard to come by in a league that expects to be one of the nation’s best. Still, the Cyclones have star power in Brackins and enough returning talent to have the players expecting big things heading into this season.
