2010-2011 Iowa State Season Preview

Iowa State looked to its past to find the coach that would lead it into the future. The Cyclones hired Fred Hoiberg, one of the most popular players ever to wear an Iowa State uniform, to replace Greg McDermott, who resigned in late April to replace Dana Altman at Creighton. But dreams can become nightmares, and Hoiberg’s first season has the makings of one. First, he will learn on the job, as he has no collegiate coaching experience. After playing in the NBA, Hoiberg took a front office job with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The new coach takes over a team loaded with new faces. Only four players – starters Scott Christopherson and Diante Garrett and redshirts Jamie Vanderbeken and Bubu Palo – are back from the 15-17 team that finished tied for ninth in the Big 12 with a 4-12 record. Ten newcomers fill out the roster, although three – Chris Babb, Anthony Booker and John Lamb – must sit out this season after transferring from other four-year schools. A fourth, Royce White, was awaiting a decision from the NCAA regarding his appeal to be eligible this season.

Iowa State Backcourt

Hoiberg plans to lean heavily on Garrett, a three-year starter whose playmaking skills are among the best in the conference. He ranked third in the league and 38th nationally in assists (5.1 per game) last season, and Hoiberg said Garrett is working tirelessly on becoming a better shooter. Christopherson started the final 15 games last season and finished with a 7.9 scoring average in his first season in Ames. Darion ttJake” Anderson and DeMarcus Phillips will get long looks in the preseason. Anderson played three seasons at Northern Illinois and could provide some immediate help, while Phillips was a major JC get for the Cyclones.

Iowa State Frontcourt

The departure of All-Big 12 performers Craig Brackins and Marquis Gilstrap leaves Iowa State in dire need of inside help. Vanderbeken averaged 5.5 points and 3.0 rebounds as a junior in 2008-09, but played in just 10 games last season before injuries forced him into a redshirt. The 6-11 Vanderbeken can be a tough matchup because of his ability to step out and score from beyond the arc. He’s made 42.2 percent (42 of 103) of his 3-point shots as a Cyclone. Melvin Ejim, Calvin Godfrey, Eric McKnight and Jordan Railey are among the newcomers who have a chance to work into the mix.

2010-2011 Iowa State Predictions

Hoiberg has his work cut out for him, but he’s looking forward to the challenge of getting the Cyclones back on track.
