2010-2011 Kentucky Season Preview

Time to reload. And as long as John Calipari is the head coach of the Wildcats, the roster turnover will be a regular occurrence. Of the five Kentucky players picked in the NBA Draft, only one was a senior. Calipari has professed that his goal is to help players achieve their dreams of turning pro, which is why he keeps recruiting kids with tons of pro potential. For the second straight season, Kentucky will usher in the best recruiting class in the country, led by guard Brandon Knight and center Enes Kanter, if he’s eligible. Calipari’s job will be to blend newcomers with the current squad – a transition junior guard Darius Miller thinks will be smooth.

Kentucky Backcourt

The Wildcats lost their starting backcourt to the NBA, but won an intense recruiting battle to land Knight. His speed, explosiveness and ability to score in bunches make him tough to contain. He is strong enough to absorb contact but still finish and has already made a believer out of Miller. Miller is the only returning starter back and realizes that he needs to be more aggressive. He averaged 6.5 points per game and shot a team-best 79.5 percent at the free-throw line. At 6-6, junior guard DeAndre Liggins is a defensive stopper and good passer off the bench. Freshmen Doran Lamb and 6-5 swingman Stacey Poole Jr. will also have chances to help on both ends of the court. Lamb is a good defender with a nice midrange game and a pretty jumper. Poole is a terrific slasher and athlete, good at beating defenders off the dribble.

Kentucky Frontcourt

Kentucky will rely on several freshmen post players to help replace Patrick Patterson, DeMarcus Cousins and Daniel Orton. Kanter is a rebounding machine ready to bang in the Southeastern Conference. He runs the floor well, has great hands and is an efficient scorer. Multi-skilled forward Terrence Jones should fit in great because he is an excellent passer and handles the ball like a guard. The team’s lone returning big guy, Josh Harrellson, should be improved and better equipped to produce.

2010-2011 Kentucky Predictions

It’s doubtful the Wildcats will duplicate last year’s 35-3 season that included an SEC regular season and tournament championship. But Calipari has reloaded with a ton of talent.

Kentucky Finish in the SEC: 3rd in East Division
