2009-2010 La Salle Season Preview

This season, the Philly program best equipped to challenge the two Ohio schools for the A-10′s top spot isn’t Temple or Saint Joseph’s.

It’s La Salle, where John Giannini’s rotation features more seniors than a church bingo night, led by Atlantic 10 Player of the Year candidate Rodney Green. Simply put, Green is one of the best college hoops players you’ve never heard of. The 6-5 Green is a stat-sheet stuffing point guard who should attract NBA scouts aplenty to Tom Gola Arena this winter.

While Green, already a 1,000-point scorer, is the headliner, La Salle’s roster is full of proven mid-sized athletes, including fellow seniors Kimmani Barrett, Yves Mekongo-Mbala and Ruben Guillandeaux – all of whom averaged in double figures in 2008-09.

They were Giannini’s first full recruiting class and would love to cap their careers with a postseason invite of some sort, preferably and possibly an NCAA Tournament bid. It could happen. While the A-10′s big boys all suffered key personnel losses, Giannini also returns 6-8 junior Jerrell Williams and could also bring back 6-9 senior Vernon Goodridge if the NCAA grants him an extra year of eligibility.

Even if Goodridge doesn’t return, La Salle should remain one of the A-10′s best rebounding teams. The reason? In addition to having a rotation loaded with long-armed, mid-sized athletes, Giannini welcomes his most ballyhooed recruit thus far in 6-10, 265-pound center Aaric Murray, one of the Top 15 incoming pivot prospects on most recruiter’s lists.

If Murray, who spurned some Big East offers, is even half as good as advertised, then Giannini will have the necessary muscle to push La Salle up near the top of the A-10 standings this year.
