2010-2011 La Salle Season Preview

Much like the famed SI cover jinx, John Giannini’s club suffered through a 2009-10 media guide jinx as three of the four senior starters who appeared on last year’s media guide cover ended up suffering serious injuries. Of the cover boys, only Rodney Green stayed healthy and he had a great season – leaving as the NO.9 all-time scorer in La Salle history with 1,914 career points. Guards Ruben Guillandeaux and Kimmani Barrett weren’t nearly as fortunate. Both missed large chunks of the season with foot injuries. Guillandeaux was injured in the fourth game, so he’ll get to return for a fifth year in 2010-11. Barrett missed nearly half of last season with his broken foot. Yves Mekongo sat out eight of last season’s final nine games with a broken pinkie finger. So what does the 2010-11 season hold on 20th and Olney? Better health, Giannini hopes. Guillandeaux, if his stress fractures fully heal, will give Giannini veteran leadership and scoring pop. The addition of 6-S Rutgers transfer Earl Pettis, a former Philly Catholic League star who transferred back home, will help ease the losses of Green and Barrett. The Explorers also welcome two highly touted point guards in Tyreek Duren from Philadelphia’s Neumann-Goretti High School and Sam Mills from Cardinal Gibbons High in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. Duren and Mills were rated among the Top 35 point guards in the high school Class of 2010. The frontcourt has some talent, too. Big man Aaric Murray, who had a strong freshman season, must only improve his shot selection and his rebounding in order to be a 2011 first-round NBA Draft pick. Murray, whose game is reminiscent of a young Bob McAdoo because of his athleticism and shooting range at 6-10, will become La Salle’s go-to guy this winter, replacing Green. Murray will be rejoined by 6-8 seniors Jerrell Williams and Steve Weingarten and 6-8 redshirt sophomore Devon White in La Salle’s frontcourt. Add in promising 6-10 freshman Matt Lopez from Sewell, N.J., and La Salle will have plenty of depth, a luxury it didn’t have during the injury-riddled 200g-10 campaign.
