2010-2011 Louisiana Tech Season Preview

The Bulldogs showed substantial improvement in each of the past two years, bettering their record by nine wins each season. Keeping that trend alive another year, however, will be a tall order. The 2009-10 campaign saw the Bulldogs win their most games since 1985 and earn a berth into the Collegeinsider.com Tournament, the program’s first postseason action since 2006. LTU has been on the rise in the past couple seasons but will need to overcome the loss of three starters and its sixth man while dealing with a slew of players who are either young or new to the program. Kyle Gibson, Magnum Rolle and Jamel Guyton, LTU’s top three scorers from a year ago, are gone. Much of the offensive responsibility this season will fall to forward Olu Ashaolu and guard DeAndre Brown. Not only are they the only returning starters, but just one other Bulldog – Anson Bartlett – has ever started. The trick will be finding players to fill the void on a team that hadn’t seen success like this since Karl Malone called Ruston home. Darius Redding is one such player. The 6-4 forward didn’t exactly light up the scoreboard last season, but a strong finish to his freshman year put him in position to earn a starting spot this year. LTU also will look to guard Brandon Gibson, who was sidelined for the entire 2009-10 season because of a broken foot. Gibson played in 25 games for the Bulldogs as a true freshman in 2008-09 and averaged just 2.5 points per game. While experience is far from a strength, size is. Coach Kerry Rupp has added a stable of big men to his roster, led by converted center Romario Souza. The 6-9 Brazilian out of the College of Southern Idaho displayed an ability to score inside and out, but he is raw and it may take time for him to get completely comfortable. Look for transfers Antwond Roshell and J.L. Lewis to also contribute in the post. Added to the roster late in the summerwere James Johnson and Jamison Sterns, a couple of high-profile recruits, both of whom could compete for immediate playing time, if not starting spots. Sterns is especially intriguing, a big point guard who drew much interest from the Big 12 before going the JC route.
