2010-2011 LSU Season Preview

LSU bottomed out last season, going 2-14 in conference play and 11-20 overall. Coach Trent Johnson lost Tasmin Mitchell, his leading scorer and rebounder, and will be without the services of returning leading scorer Bo Spencer during the fall semester due to academics. Spencer can return during the spring semester, contingent upon passing his fall course load. Meanwhile, Johnson is not concerned about his lone senior’s availability based on a solid six-man recruiting class, which was ranked 24th by Rivals.com.

LSU Backcourt

With Spencer on the shelf early, Chris Bass and freshman Andre Stringer will man the point guard duties. Bass started 19 games last season and had a 2.5 assist-to-turnover ratio, which led the SEC. Spencer totaled 80 assists against 100 turnovers, so the Tigers should be more efficient with Bass leading the offense. The addition of freshman K.C. Ross-Miller will give LSU more perimeter depth. Ross Miller averaged a double-double last season for God’s Academy High School in Dallas, Texas. He also recorded an eyebrow-raising 6.6 steals per night as a senior and 7.2 steals as a junior. As Ross-Miller goes forward, he may work in as a two-guard since he seems to have more scoring ability than Bass or Stringer.

LSU Frontcourt

Storm Warren averaged double figures and led LSU in rebounding at 7.2 boards per game, good for seventh in the conference. Warren, who also led LSU with 44 blocks, has excellent physicality and post moves, which will make him a tough matchup in the paint. Improving 6-11 center Dennis Harris joins Warren, who shot 50.5 percent from the floor last year while averaging 14.3 minutes per game. Freshman Matt Derenbecker, a Rivals. com four-star recruit, is a left-handed shooter who can drill the 17-to-19-foot jump shot, adding dimension to Johnson’s attack. In addition, 6-8 freshman Jalen Courtney is an incoming post who could have a role early. Courtney, known more for his rebounding skills, will help the depth in the middle and also provide toughness.

2010-2011 LSU Predictions

With Spencer out, this could be one of the nation’s youngest basketball teams. But with rapid development, it could surprise early. In addition, the Tigers shot only 40 percent from the floor a year ago – last in the SEC. Improvement in the perimeter game is needed to make things easier for Warren and the freshmen posts. The Tigers may be a year away from a serious run at the league title, but don’t undersell Johnson, who continues to fly under the radar as one of the nation’s better coaches. LSU Finish in the SEC: 5th in West Division
