2009-2010 Marquette Season Preview

Buzz Williams is about to learn how the other half lives. Sort of. After inheriting three star senior guards and an NCAA Tournament ready team for his debut season as the Golden Eagles’ coach last year, Williams will try to rebuild quickly in the unforgiving Big East. He sees it as an opportunity.

Having standout forward Lazar Hayward back will make Williams’ re-tooling easier. So will a consensus Top 20 recruiting class that features three potential guard starters and forward Jeronne Maymon, Wisconsin’s Mr. Basketball as a high school senior.

Marquette Backcourt

What’s the easiest way to replace the guard trio of Jerel McNeal, Wesley Matthews and Dominic James, all four-year starters? The junior college route is one answer, and Williams landed two JC All-Americans in Darius Johnson-Odom and Dwight Buycks.

Johnson-Odom, who has three years of eligibility remaining. averaged 21.6 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.6 assists at Hutchinson (Kansas) Junior College. Buycks should fill the shooting guard spot after averaging 17.5 ppg last year and scoring 1,254 points in two seasons at Indian Hills (Iowa) Junior College. Both earned first-team All-American honors.

Highly regarded freshman Junior Cadougan, a Top 100 national recruit, is being counted on immediately to handle the point guard duties – though Johnson-Odom will help. So will senior reserve David Cubillan.

Swingman Jimmy Butler, who earned Marquette’s ‘Super Sub Award’ last season after arriving from the JC ranks, is back after appearing in all 35 games and averaging 5.9 points and 3.9 rebounds.

But replacing McNeal, Matthews and James – who combined to average 49.1 points, 13.6 rebounds and 11.4 assists per game last season – will take time.

Marquette Frontcourt

Hayward has blossomed into one of the Big East’s most productive frontcourt players after nearly averaging a double-double last season, but some introductions may be necessary here. Mr. Hayward, meet your new frontcourt teammates – all four of them.

Hayward, who has spent most of his career battling bigger players for rebounds and scuffling inside, now has some size and help. That’s the good news. The not-so-good news is it comes from the freshman class.

Jeronne Maymon should help immediately in the low post after averaging 17.8 points and 8.7 rebounds as a high school senior. The 250- pounder was a consensus Top 100 recruit.

After that, uncertainty abounds about how quickly some of the newcomers will develop. Youssoupha Mbao is one of those question marks after the 7-2, 215-pounder averaged 13.4 points, 11.2 rebounds and 6.0 blocks at Stoneridge (Calif.) Prep last year. Brett Roseboro, a 6-10, 230-pound freshman, may be slotted for reserve duty as well.

The most athletic of the frontcourt newcomers is 6-7 Erik Williams, who averaged 24.6 points and 11.7 rebounds as a high school senior in Texas last year.

More is also expected of 6-10 sophomore Chris Otule after he was sidelined the first 10 games last year because of a foot injury.

But the frontcourt will go as the versatile Hayward goes. In addition to being one of the Big East’s top returning scorers and rebounders, he shot 35.8 percent on 3-pointers last year and 82 percent from the foul line.

2009-2010 Marquette Predictions

Seeing Marquette without McNeal, Matthews and James will be strange. But Williams appears to have come up with enough suitable answers to keep the Golden Eagles successful. The key is how much Maymon helps Hayward in the frontcourt and how quickly the trio of new guards adapts. If you’re a Marquette fan, brace for a roller-coaster ride. The Golden Eagles will look very good some games, lost in others but should be competitive throughout the year.
