2010-2011 Marquette Season Preview

All Buzz Williams wants to do this year is maintain the status quo. The problem is, at Marquette that means 20-plus wins and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Golden Eagles are s-for-s in both areas since joining the Big East. Extending those streaks means getting the most out of six newcomers – two of them Top 125 recruits, another the national JC Player of the Year. Call Williams cautiously optimistic as he enters his third year at Marquette. Without All-Big East forward Lazar Hayward, and with two potentially key players (Junior Cadougan and Chris Otule) coming off injuries, Williams’ challenge is getting the six newcomers to mesh with the seven holdovers. But he also sees an advantage with his large recruiting haul: More flexibility in terms of style of play in a Big East that increasingly demands the ability to do just that.

Marquette Backcourt

If Cadougan makes a full recovery from a torn Achilles’ tendon, the major question in the backcourt – point guard – will be answered. Highly regarded freshman Reggie Smith can help immediately, but the hope is to have him work in at a relaxed pace. Darius Johnson-Odom’s first season after arriving from the junior college ranks was a good one: He finished second in the Big East in 3-point shooting at 47-4 percent. The senior has 20-point scoring potentiaL Vander Blue, a consensus TOP-40 prospect and local legend, has the ability to command time right away, despite a crowd at shooting guard D.J. Newbill was slated to join Marquette, but Williams rescinded his scholarship. Dwight Buycks comes off of a season that saw him start 11 games, with Williams counting on him to make major strides as a senior. He needed last season to adjust after arriving from JC.

Marquette Frontcourt

Count on a lot of mixing and matching in the frontcourt, though Jimmy Butler is secure on the wing. The vastly improved Butler rose from nearobscurity into an All-Big East caliber player, owning a mid-range game that now rates as one of the league’s best. The uncertainty up front is at center, where Williams isn’t sure if Otule or freshman Davante Gardner will provide the post presence he needs. Otule has been hampered by foot injuries for two years. Gardner, 6-8, has reportedly been battling his weight. But Williams does have options now. Jae Crowder earned JC Player of the Year honors in leading Howard College to the national title and has a Hayward-like physique. And freshman Jamail Jones was rated the nation’s 52nd-best player by Rivals.com. Joseph Fulce, a 6-7 senior, returns after starting 13 games last season. Sophomore Erik Williams, also 6-7, will look to improve off of a disappointing debut year.

2010-2011 Marquette Predictions

Players develop at Marquette. They did under Tom Crean and they’re doing so under Williams. If that trend continues, the Golden Eagles could be a sneaky-good team. They have a star in Butler, a solid Big East player in Johnson-Odom and enough depth and athleticism to surprise. But how quickly will it all come together? Quickly enough to win 20 and make a sixth straight NCAA appearance? That’s what Marquette expects.

Marquette Finish in the Big East: 7th
