Marshall Coach: Tom Herrion – At Marshall: first year; overall: 80-38, 4years

Marshall Players to Watch: Now that Damler Pins has more of an opportunity to score, he’ll get more notice. He can already pass it and handle ateam. With his sharp eye, he should make abig impact.

Marshall Key Losses: Tyler Wilkerson, F, 6-8, 240 (14.0 ppg, 7.2 rpg); Hassan Whiteside, F, 7-0, 235 (13.1 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 5.4 bpg); Chris Lutz, G, 6-3, 190 (8.7 ppg, 1.9 rpg)

2010-2011 Marshall Season Preview

When coaches win 24 games at schools not known for hitting such levels, their reward is usually pretty big. It’s either a fat contract extension or a plum job in a bigger conference. After Donnie Jones led Marshall to that plateau last year, not to mention an 11-5 Conference USA mark and a second-round appearance in the CollegeInsider. com Tournament, he headed to Orlando and UCF. Some called it a lateral move, as the Golden Knights are even a Conference USA rival, but no matter, the task now is for the Herd to stay the course. Enter Tom Herrion, who takes over at Marshall after a successful stint as an assistant at Pittsburgh. He promises to play an aggressive, up-tempo style, and though the Herd is without three stalwarts from last year – Tyler Wilkerson, Hassan Whiteside and Chris Lutz – he does have some talent at his disposal. It’s unlikely Marshall will win 24 games again, but the Herd should finish above .500. If Herrion can continue to recruit as he did at Pitt, Marshall’s future is bright. The backcourt should be deep, thanks to excellent distributor and fine shooter Damier Pitts, while Shaquille Johnson is strong off the dribble, passes well and can defend. He, however, had knee surgery in April and may not be 100 percent this falL Sophomore DeAndre Kane, who sat out last year as a partial qualifier, can play either position and was excellent last year in practice, particularly shooting the ball, and tough freshman Dante Holmes fits Herrion’s system well. The losses of Wilkerson and Whiteside up front will hurt, but the return of C-USA Sixth Man of the Year Dago Pena gives the Herd an insideout scoring option with the potential to break out. Expect senior Tirrell Baines to play physically inside, while USF transfer Eladio Espinosa can handle either forward position, and springy Antonio Haymon is perfect for Herrion’s style. There could be trouble in the pivot, where junior Nigel Spikes is green, but JC newcomer Aundra Williams should help, though neither will likely dazzle. Even without a stalwart there, Marshall should be formidable, if not worthy of 24 wins and job offers.
