2009-2010 Massachusetts Season Preview

A talented backcourt gives any team a chance to go a long way. UMass coach Derek Kellogg has two outstanding guards in Ricky Harris and Anthony Gurley, so even if the Minutemen aren’t the pick to win the A-10, they have a nice foundation from which to start.

Harris, a returning all-conference pick, was one of the A-10′s top producers a year ago and is capable of leading the league in scoring. Gurley, a 6-3 junior, can play both positions in the backcourt and also is capable of prolific scoring nights.

The duo will need to provide leadership to a relatively young team because the Minutemen have added seven new players.

UMass has a number of highly touted recruits, which includes Terrell Vinson, a 6-7 forward who received plenty of interest nationally. He’s joined by Freddie Riley, Javorn Farrell, Sampson Carter and Raphiael Putney.

Vinson, who chose the Minutemen over Cincinnati and Maryland, is a versatile scorer – a big man who likes to shoot. The knock on him is that he falls deeply in love with his ability to shoot from long range.

Riley should also see immediate time. He’s a slender streaker who was rated as one of the nation’s better small forwards as a high school senior.

Although Gurley is a versatile player, UMass would like to have a true point guard to replace Chris Lowe, who was an excellent passer. Look for 6-4 sophomore David Gibbs and 6-1 junior Gary Correia to get playing time at point guard.

Gone is big man Tony Gaffney, the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year, but UMass picked up a couple of key transfers in Sean Carter (Oregon State) and Hashim Bailey (Memphis).

In the frontcourt, 6-9 sophomore Tyrell Lynch is the Minutemen’s top returning big man, which is why the arrivals of Carter and Bailey are so key.
