2010-2011 Massachusetts Season Preview

It hasn’t been as fast as UMass fans had hoped for, but there was evidence of real progress from the Minutemen as last season wound down, with wins over Rhode Island and Charlotte and a close loss to Richmond to end the season. The Charlotte win was the Minutemen’s first tournament victory in eight seasons and set the stage for a team that brings back a good bit of production. Although UMass will miss Ricky Harris, the school’s third all-time leading scorer, the program appears to be in good shape. Anthony Gurley, a 6-3 senior, is the team’s leading returning scorer and one of the top guards in the Atlantic 10. There should also be plenty of experience in the backcourt with 6-1 senior Gary Correia, who played on the Minutemen’s 2008 NIT team that made the finals. Up front, Sean Carter is the team’s best rebounder and defender. The 6-9 junior had a team-high 42 blocks and will have help from 6-10, 275-pounder Hashim Bailey, who gives UMass another big body in the middle. Carter and Bailey aren’t great scorers, but they hustle, pick up loose balls and do the little things needed to win. Coach Derek Kellogg will have a host of young players who have experience a year after he played four freshmen – Sampson Carter, Javorn Farrell, Freddie Riley and Terrell Vinson. Vinson, a 6-7 sophomore, had a solid season scoring and rebounding and averaged g.6 points and 5,4 rebounds per game. Riley also had an impressive season, averaging 9.3 points. Both seem prepared to experience that sophomore bump, from solid rookies to impact presence. This year’s rookies also should help, as Raphiael Putney redshirted last year. The 6-8 forward has a great touch from the perimeter. Jesse Morgan is another good shooter who was an outstanding scorer in the Philadelphia Public League, where he averaged 28 points per game as one of the city’s marquee players. Freshmen Daryl Traynham and Maxie Esho were high school teammates in Maryland and, if history is any guide, Kellogg won’t be afraid to give them their minutes.
