2009-2010 Memphis Season Preview

Josh Pastner sounds like he’s trying to make things easier on himself during his first couple of years in Memphis, but he’s actually telling the truth.

The Tigers are emerging from a tremendous period of success, and enter 2009-10 with talent but hardly the expectations that they can match what they did the past few years. Assuring that are the departures of last year’s top four scorers – Tyreke Evans, Robert Dozier, Shawn Taggart and Antonio Anderson.

You’ll recognize some of the returning names, and the newcomers have talent and potential, but Memphis is not poised to be the scourge of C-USA. Leading the returnees is 6-5 senior guard Doneal Mack, who must shoot the ball better this year for the Tigers to have success.

Though Pastner is likely to move away from the full-time use of Calipari’s beloved dribble-drive offense, Mack will get the chance to break people down off the bounce. So will 6-7 freshman Latavious Williams, an explosive weapon who will see time at the point and wings. Roburt Sallie proved himself a dangerous long-range weapon last year and will get plenty of 3-point tries, while Willie Kemp can pass and defend but isn’t an accurate shooter. Duke transfer Elliot Williams is eligible immediately, since he moved to Memphis for family reasons.

The frontcourt is almost entirely new. Angel Garcia is a skilled 6-11 sophomore who battled injury and eligibility problems last year and will need time but should get going mid-year, while 6-9 JC newcomer Will Coleman is a road grader. Sophomore Wesley Witherspoon excels in the open court, and lanky freshman Martin Ngaloro needs heft and defensive growth.
