2010-2011 Memphis Season Preview

When folks look back at Conference USA basketball years from now, they will likely regard 2009-10 as something of an anomaly or a hiccup in the natural path of history. Because after one year out of the league’s top spot – and the NCAA Tourney – Memphis is back. Second-year coach Josh Pastner has assembled a recruiting class that rivals the best ever corralled by John Calipari and that is the reason for optimism among Tigers fans. The decision by Elliot Williaqls to leave early for the NBA Draft, Roburt Sallie’s leaving the program, the February defection of Pierre Henderson-Niles and the expiration of Willie Kemp and Doneal Mack’s eligibilities have left the Tigers with two holdovers of note – three, if you count lightly used big man Angel Garcia. Though forwards Wesley Witherspoon and Will Coleman will see a lot of time, and Witherspoon has already attracted notice among draftniks as a potential first-round choice, this year will be about the newcomers and how quickly they sparkle.

Memphis Backcourt

It will definitely be exciting to watch freshman point man Joe Jackson operate. He can hit the 3-pointer and plays over the rim, despite his modest height. And when he isn’t looking for his shot, he willingly sets up his pals. He hopes to team with a pair of heralded wings in a robust backcourt. Will Barton is a relentless scorer but may not be eligible to play, while 6-6 Jelan Kendrick is smooth and versatile if not polished with the ball. Those freshmen will be joined by a real prize, 6-2 Charles Carmouche, a junior who left New Orleans when the school dropped to Division III and will be immediately eligible. He can defend, is quick and scored 12.6 points per game last year for the Privateers. Chris Crawford is a spot-up shooter, while Antonio Barton is a quick backup point who can defend.

Memphis Frontcourt

Witherspoon is an extremely versatile player who gives the Tigers a valuable weapon along the perimeter. He can finish off the dribble and stroke the three. His long reach allows him to pilfer wayward passes, and he’s a solid rebounder. Coleman, meanwhile, bangs the boards and scores well close to the rack He’ll be joined by another power man, Tarik Black, an excellent rebounder and defender. Cameroon native Hippolyte Tsafack is still blossoming, but he can run the floor and score inside. Garcia can score close to the hoop, but needs to get stronger.

2010-2011 Memphis Predictions

It’s up to Pastner to piece it together, but he has plenty of talent and the potential to put the Tigers back on top in the conference after one year away. Memphis might not be ready to challenge for a Final Four berth, but by March, the Tigers should be formidable. The eight new faces may take a little while to mesh (thank goodness for an August exhibition trip), but once they do, look out. Memphis will be talented and dangerous. Calipari would have been quite proud to announce this crop of newcomers, and it includes a couple of players who could be of the one-and-done variety, which fits right into the Coach Cal model. Pastner filled every position and even imported a veteran transfer – Carmouche – who will help considerably. Expect big things out of Memphis, once again.
