2010-2011 Michigan Season Preview

John Beilein has reconstructed programs in the past, but he’s had a foundation to use as starting blocks. Now, he enters a new phase at Michigan but surges forward without a dedicated go-to scorer and surrounded by inexperience on a team that has even slimmer margin for error than the Wolverines did last season. Even after losing the two pillars – DeShawn Sims and Manny Harris – he’s relied on for three years, Beilein believes that once developed, this collection of talent might have a higher ceiling than any of his previous rebuilding efforts. In the meantime, though, Michigan faces plenty of obstacles, which will require patience in what could be a challenging season.

Michigan Backcourt

Michigan has invested plenty in junior Stu Douglass and sophomore Darius Morris. The two were expected to be among three candidates for the starting point guard job before Laval Lucas-Perry was dismissed over the summer. Freshman Tim Hardaway Jr. also could contribute, possessing a knack for scoring and a basketball IQ that could make him valuable. But of any of his backcourt mates, Morris is probably suited to have the biggest impact. After playing two years out of position, junior Zack Novak likely will make the move to small forward or a bigger guard, filling a void left by Harris.

Michigan Frontcourt

Size always has been an issue for the Wolverines. Although Beilein has filled out his roster with some length, Michigan will have to be patient in a scenario in which its center and backup are likely to bring very little or no experience to the table. Having lost the top two rebounders, Beilein’s bigs have to find a way to pick up the slack, all while learning to play at the Big Ten level. Blake McLimans and Jordan Morgan showed flashes on Michigan’s practice squad last season. Morgan provides muscle, while at 6-10 McLimans is more skilled and has the ability to strike from the perimeter. Beilein would like to see both become multidimensional but knows it won’t happen immediately. Freshman Jon Horford also has the potential to move into a key post role. After proving himself a consistent double-double performer as a high school senior, Horford will get the first chance to claim the center spot, while Evan Smotrycz has the width to also compete for early playing time.

2010-2011 Michigan Predictions

As high as expectations were for Michigan last season, the Wolverines will enter this season at the opposite end of the spectrum. There will be plenty of trial and error as Beilein tries to find good combinations on a team that has a lot of pieces, but not a lot that have a perfectly fitting place in the puzzle. Michigan Finish in the Big Ten: 10th
