2009-2010 Michigan State Season Preview

Michigan State’s mission last season was clear-cut from the beginning: Win a national championship in its back yard.

But after North Carolina stood in the way of the Spartans’ title aspirations, Michigan State transferred its disappointment into motivation. Now again as one of the country’s top-ranked teams, the Spartans have set their sights on college basketball’s top prize.

Despite having to replace a few key players, the talent pool remains deep enough to make the Spartans national title contenders once again.

Whether Michigan State’s ability to play any style, while wearing teams down with its depth, is enough remains the great unknown.

Michigan State Backcourt

After avoiding a sophomore jinx by claiming Big Ten Player of the Year honors, Kalin Lucas is prepared to move into a bigger role. Lucas headlines a talented backcourt that possesses a top-notch skill set, but one that must deal with the loss of its top defender in Travis Walton.

And as talented as Lucas is, it’s his increased maturity that has coach Tom Izzo most excited.

Lucas will take on the lead role in a loaded backcourt that includes juniors Durrell Summers and Chris Allen along with sophomore Korie Lucious. Allen is one of the best shooters recruited by Izzo and expects to be much improved after a roller coaster sophomore season.

Izzo is looking for more consistency from his young guards as the Spartans look to play even more of an up-tempo game than they have in the past.

Michigan State Frontcourt

The Spartans’ biggest concern will come in reloading in the post following the graduation of Goran Suton, who sparked Michigan State’s title game run.

The Spartans have plenty of options at forward as a healthy Raymar Morgan lends some stability along with sophomore Delvon Roe, who began to show his potential after overcoming an early season knee injury.

Sophomore Draymond Green also will play a key role in Michigan State’s stable of forwards, which also took a hit with the graduation of Marquise Gray.

But it’s at center where the biggest question mark lies. Redshirt junior 7-0 center Tom Herzog has had difficulty putting weight on, while the Spartans also lose size without reserve center Idong Ibok.

Freshmen Garrick Sherman and Derrick Nix are both old-school post players who possess impressive back-to-the-basket moves and the kind of solid frames lzzo is searching for.

Nix has dropped considerable weight since beginning workouts, making him an ideal candidate to help fill the hole left: by Suton’s departure. And while both newcomers will have the chance to have an impact, lzzo doesn’t expect them to immediately fill all the roles Suton did.

2009-2010 Michigan State Predictions

There’s no question Michigan State has the talent level to contend for another Big Ten title and put itself in contention for a national crown.

How quickly lzzo is able to find suitable replacements for his key losses remains critical, especially in a Big Ten race that could be as close as it has been in years.

But like always, the Spartans will have a say in their own destiny. Michigan State Finish in the Big Ten: 1st
