2009-2010 Missouri Season Preview

Missouri took a giant stride in Mike Anderson’s third season, winning a school-record 31 games, claiming its first Big 12 Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Tournament’s Elite Eight.

The Tigers did it by relying on a fast paced style of play that featured relentless pressure. Stamina and the willingness to contribute when called upon outweighs go-to stars in Anderson’s system.

The coach is optimistic about the future in spite of the loss of the team’s leading three scorers – forwards Leo Lyons and DeMarre Carroll and swingman Matt Lawrence.

Missouri Backcourt

With the emphasis that Anderson places on defense, it’s not surprising the Tigers have two of the most devastating defensive guards in the Big 12.

Seniors J.T. Tiller and Taylor combined for 123 steals last season. Both also are dependable play makers, with Tiller handing our 138 assists and Taylor 128. Tiller might be the best on-ball defender in the league. The only unanimous pick to the conference’s all-defensive team, Tiller also was named the Big 12′s co-Defensive Player of the Year. He can contribute offensively, although he is coming off surgery on his shooting wrist.

Taylor’s decision-making allowed him to finish fifth nationally in assists-to-turnovers ratio (3 to 1). He earned a spot on the Big 12′s newcomer team after playing his first two seasons at Delaware. He finished the season averaging 6.7 points but stepped things up in postseason play, averaging 10.0 points in seven games.

The Tigers don’t lack for depth in the backcourt with the return of Kim English, Marcus Denmon and Miguel Paul. English started 13 games last season and was one of the Tigers’ top perimeter threats, as his 41 3-point baskets were second on the team.

Denmon also showed a nice outside shot, sinking 34 3-point shots as a freshman, while Paul gives Anderson another guard who is not afraid to let defense be his ticket to playing time.

Missouri Frontcourt

The departure of Carroll and Lyons deprives the Tigers of 31.2 points and 13.3 rebounds per game. Missouri will look to a group of young athletic forwards to fill the void.

Keith Ramsey’s five starts make him Missouri’s most experienced frontcourt player. Justin Safford showed a soft touch for a big man – he made 13 of his 20 3-point attempts – while Laurence Bowers was efficient in limited playing time as a freshman.

Also returning is trimmed down center Steve Moore, while the Tigers will bring in three freshmen in Tyler Stone, Keith Dewitt and Jon Undetwood.

2009-2010 Missouri Predictions

Anderson’s challenge this season is to keep the Tigers from taking a step backward. That won’t be easy given the expected strength of the Big 12 and the Tigers’ personnel losses.

This figures to be one of Anderson’s youngest clubs as 12 of the 14 players will be in just their first or second years in the program. Anderson has shown patience in the past, refusing to take shortcuts and sticking to his system. His reward came last season when the Tigers once again became a player on the national stage.
