2010-2011 Missouri State Season Preview

After making a giant stride in Cuonzo Martin’s second season as coach, Missouri State appears poised to take another step forward. The Bears return five starters and two key reserves from the team that won 24 games and claimed the CollegeInsider.com Tournament championship. Point guard Justin Fuehrmeyer, who averaged 3.6 points and 3.1 assists per game, is the Bears’ main loss. Martin’s team improved its victory total by 13 wins over the 2008-09 season, his first in Springfield. The Martin era debuted with an 11-20 record that was plagued by an offense that averaged just 60.9 points and ranked at the bottom of the league in shooting. The offense showed dramatic improvement last season, averaging a league-high 71.4 points per game while ranking second in field-goal percentage (.449) and 3-point percentage (.366). Missouri State returns 91 percent of its scoring, which is an indication that this could be the season when the Bears do something they’ve never done before. The Bears have finished second five times since joining the Valley in 1991 but have never taken home the title. In order to do so, Missouri State must tighten up the part of the game that wins championships – defense. Martin was displeased at times last season by his team’s stray from the defensive principles he holds so dear. His Purdue roots – he played and was an assistant there – leave little room for sloppiness on that end of the court. The Bears finished fourth in the Valley in scoring defense (65.3 ppg) but did show the lock-down ability when they wanted to win games. Still, the defensive inconsistency was responsible for a slide during the middle of the conference season. Leading scorer Kyle Weems remains one of the league’s toughest matchups at the small forward spot, while guard Adam Leonard set the school record for 3-point field goals (103) while earning Valley Newcomer of the Year honors. Other starters returning are J ermaine Mallett, Will Creekmore and Keith Pickens, while Nafis Ricks and Caleb Patterson combined to average 13.5 points off the bench.
