OK. So Darington Hobson left for the NBA after a command one-and-dope performance. And Roman Martinez, the Lobos’ heart and soul, graduated. Just don’t count Steve Alford out of another 20-win season and postseason bid; he appears to have the Lobos on that sort of a rolL His teams have been picked to finish fifth in the Mountain West three times, and his ledger reads like this: third, a tie for first and – last season – all alone in first thanks to the best record in school history, 30-5. For yet another encore, Alford has one of the West’s most dynamic guards in senior Dairese Gary, an All-Mountain West and all-league defensive team member. He’ll be flanked by Phillip McDonald, a 6-5 big scoring guard. Up front, forward A.J. Hardeman returns for his junior season, but all eyes will be on UCLA transfer Drew Gordon, who becomes eligible in mid-December. The highly recruited power forward had a mutual parting of the ways last fall with Bruins coach Ben Howland. Alford has worked wonders with other players who made multiple stops. He turned J.R. Giddens – a volatile Kansas transfer – into a late firstround draft pick. Hobson had any number of high school and junior college stops before getting eligible at New Mexico, but he thrived in Alford’s system, taking MWC Player of the Year honors. That touch with players and the success it’s brought has earned Alford plenty of support with the administration, which hired him away from Iowa in hopes of restoring the program’s glory days. It wasn’t necessarily a popular hire at the time, but it has worked out for all involved. The school rewarded Alford with a contract extension through the end of this decade. A two-time MWC Coach of the Year, he more than earned his seven figure salary (rare at an MWC school) with ticket sales and donations increasing from $5.4 million to $7.1 million since he’s been in Albuquerque. The long pact still won’t keep away other suitors. During the press conference for the extension this summer, Alford said he just told his agent to stop answering the calls.
