2010-2011 New Mexico State Season Preview

The Aggies are very big, very experienced and they should be very good. New Mexico State lost its top two scorers in guards Jahmar Young and Jonathan Gibson. That’s the bad news. The good news is that almost everyone else who played a significant role in the Aggies’ WAC Tournament championship and their narrow loss to Michigan State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament is back. The difference is that last year NMSU relied heavily on guard play whereas the majority of the offense this season should come through the post. Center Hamidu Rahman and forward Wendell McKines each nearly averaged a double- double last season. MeKines is also a threat from the wing, shooting 37 percent from 3-point land. Troy Gillenwater shares the same versatility. The junior forward is NMSU’s top returning scorer, although his 14.6 points per game came in just 13 appearances due to academic issues. With those behind him, Gillenwater has a good shot at earning a starting spot and becoming a bigger part of the offense. Size is certainly NMSU’s strength, but experienced and talented guards will help make this a balanced offense. The backcourt is led by junior point guard Hernst Laroche, who has started every game since he arrived on campus. Senior Gordo Castillo, who played in all 34 games last year but started just two, is a candidate to fill the shooting guard role, and he is also NMSU’s best returning 3-point threat. True freshman Christian Kabongo may also see some time at the position. Playing time issues should look much clearer once the team completes an eight-day August exhibition tour of Canada, which includes stops in Montreal and Ottawa. The points will come for the Aggies, but if NMSU is going to overtake Utah State and go deep into the postseason, it will have to improve its defense and rebounding. The fast-paced Aggies ranked last in the WAC in scoring defense and were out-rebounded by more than two boards per game.
