2009-2010 North Carolina State Season Preview

This could be a long year, Wolfpack fans. Consider yourself warned. Look, it makes sense. In a lot of ways, Lowe hasn’t had to go through the typical ‘new coach rebuilding process’ until this season. He replaced Herb Sendek three years ago and inherited a strong core of players, supplementing that core with the occasional stud recruit, like J.J. Hickson. But three years later, Sendek’s last big recruiting class has cleared out – anchored by Courtney Fells and Ben McCauley, with junior Brandon Costner also turning pro – leaving Lowe room to bring in his first huge wave of players. And he brought in six freshmen.

North Carolina State Backcourt

Only two of the newcomers are guards, which is a shame, because the Wolfpack really needed some new guards. They tried to get the best one in the country, but Raleigh native John Wall chose Kentucky.

The incumbent at the point is sharp-shooting Javier Gonzalez, who would be a fabulous backup in the ACC, but isn’t starter material. After two years, his career ratio of assists to turnovers is lime more than l-to-1. Other options at the point are Farnold Degand, whose playing time dwindled last season, and sophomore Julius Mays, who shoots better than he creates. The answer could be Lorenzo Brown, who was considered one of the Top 10 point guards in the high school class of 2009.

One thing working in the Wolfpack’s favor is the heavy losses at guard throughout the ACC. Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington, Tyrese Rice, Toney Douglas, Jack McClinton, K.C. Rivers, Gerald Henderson, A.D. Vassallo – the list goes on and on. If the Wolfpack have to lean heavily on a freshmen-sophomore backcourt of Brown, Mays, C.J. Williams and Scott Wood, well, so be it.

North Carolina State Frontcourt

This should be the strength of the team. Tracy Smith tripled his scoring from his freshman to sophomore seasons, and Dennis Horner could do something similar as his minutes multiply.

Lowe added two freshmen who will contribute immediately in DeShawn Painter and Richard Howell. Although Painter has the bigger upside, Howell is more refined at the moment. Lowe added an intriguing prospect for the future in Australian Jordan Vandenberg, a legitimate 7-footer who plays like most of the Aussie big men who came before him, meaning, he’s not a banger.

2009-2010 North Carolina State Predictions

Entering his fourth season in Raleigh, Lowe’s stamp is about to be unequivocally on this program. With the exception of Horner, he signed everyone on the roster. Wolfpack fans are not a patient bunch, which is why Lowe’s pursuit of patience could be futile. They don’t want progress. They want wins.
