2009-2010 Ohio State Season Preview

Thad Matta has a knack for luring the nation’s finest preps to Columbus. He brought in the ‘Thad Five’ in 2006, and has another highly touted quintet ready to sign on the dotted line in November.

But this year the Buckeyes don’t have any freshmen on their roster. That doesn’t mean Matta won’t unveil some sweet reinforcements to aid Evan Turner, Jon Diebler and William Buford.

There’s 7-0 sophomore Zisis Sarikopoulos, who’s ready to help after sitting out his transfer year from UAB. There’s 6-8 forward Nikola Kecman, who played just one game last year thanks to an NCAA suspension and a torn ACL in his left knee.

And, most important of all, the Buckeyes welcome back junior forward David Lighty, who stood out in OSU’s first seven games before he fractured his left foot and took a medical redshirt.

Ohio State Backcourt

There’s not much that Turner can’t do. The unanimous first-team All-Big Ten selection led the Bucks in scoring, rebounding, assists and steals, Turner was so diffIcult to control and relied upon so heavily that he piled up more free-throw attempts (222) than the next three Buckeyes combined.

Turner’s prowess opened up spots allover the court, particularly for Diebler and Buford. Diebler finished second in the Big Ten in 3-pointers (96), while Buford’s soft jumper started to fall in Big Ten play as he averaged 12.6 points and missed just one free throw in conference play.

That’s a terrific trio to put on the court at the same time, but none of them are true point guards. That’s where seniors P.J. Hill and Jeremie Simmons have to show improvement if the Bucks are going places.

Simmons started the first 25 games before. Hill took over for the final eight, which included an intriguing line in the NCAA Tournament first-round loss to Siena. Hill provided nine points, eight rebounds and four assists, but he also committed five turnovers.

Ohio State Frontcourt

At 6-5, 220 pounds, Lighty isn’t anybody’s idea of a true power forward. But in Ohio State’s system and with his willingness to do anything to help, the Bucks won’t have any problem reintegrating the last reminder of the original ‘Thad Five’ into the lineup.

Kecman, who has added 20 pounds since transferring a year ago, has almost completely recovered from the ACL surgery that ended his season in January. His outside shooting makes him a ’4′ in the Matt Sylvester mold.

Junior Dallas Lauderdale, who started 31 games last year, returns as one of the league’s most physical post presences. As he did last year with NBA first-rounder B.J. Mullens, he’ll share time with Sarikopoulos. The true post player didn’t do much at UAB as a freshman, but there was a good reason.

2009-2010 Ohio State Predictions

The Buckeyes had 10 days of practices in August as well as a Labor Day trip to Canada to get a jump-start on molding this squad. With a terrific blend of experience and talent. Matta’s crew should be in the thick of the Big Ten title hunt and shooting for the Sweet 16 come March.
