2010-2011 Ohio State Season Preview

There aren’t many programs that can lose the consensus National Player of the Year – Evan Turner left early to become the No.2 pick in the NBA Draft – and feel at least as good about their chances the following season. Yet that’s the enviable position Ohio State holds as it guns for another Big Ten title and top-two seed in the NCAA Tournament. The Buckeyes bring back their four other starters including iron men David Lighty, Jon Diebler and William Buford – while fortifying them with the nation’s NO.4 recruiting class according to the Recruiting Services Consensus Index. The “Thad Six” features a pair of McDonald’s All-Americans in center Jared Sullinger (who won the East team’s MVP) and wing Deshaun Thomas. Shooting guard Jordan Sibert and at least one of the two incoming point guards (Aaron Craft and Lenzelle Smith Jr.) should make their presences felt immediately, too.

Ohio State Backcourt

Thad Matta solved his point guard issue last season by putting the ball in Turner’s hands, spreading the floor and letting him create for everyone. Matta has another question mark at point this season, but has more potential answers this time around. He’s thinking about trying “Turner: The Sequel” by making either Buford, Diebler or Lighty the primary ballhandler, even though none of them are prototypical point guards. He’s also anxious to see how Craft and Smith look when they run the show. Craft is more of a true point, while Smith’s passing ability belies his swingman size. Whoever wins the job will have lots of options at his disposal. Diebler drilled 212 3-pointers the past two seasons. Buford is the team’s top returning scorer and expands his repertoire every season Sibert attacks the basket as well as he shoots.

Ohio State Frontcourt

Matta has a big question up front as well, but it’s one that’s much more fun to solve: How can he best utilize Sullinger? The 280pound freshman is all but unstoppable on the block, but that’s where returning senior Dallas Lauderdale set powerful screens and shot 77 percent last season. Fortunately for the Bucks, Sullinger is more than a center. Lighty refractured the fifth metatarsal in his left foot on May 11 when he stepped on Diebler’s foot in a pickup game, but he was healing on schedule. He’ll again play power forward or wherever else he is needed. The powerfully built Thomas has a knack for rebounding, but he’s a born scorer. He’s the NO.3 all-time scorer among Indiana schoolboys and averaged 31.8 points as a senior. J.D. Weatherspoon, the sixth freshman in the class, is regarded as a tttremendous athlete but his playing time will come as his shot improves.

2010-2011 Ohio State Predictions

Ohio State tried to get by with a six-man rotation last season. While the Buckeyes certainly belonged on the short list of threats when the NCAA Tournament began, who’s to say whether their heavy regular-season minutes helped to end their run in the Sweet 16? Lack of depth shouldri’t be an impediment this year.
