2009-2010 Oklahoma Season Preview

Jeff Capel’s three seasons at Oklahoma have produced swift and stark improvement, with 2008-09 going down as one of the best in school history.

But then, Capel was blessed to have Blake Griffin the past two seasons.

So now what, with Griffin moving on to collect pro paydays as the No. 1 NBA Draft pick?

Actually, Griffin’s impact on the program continues, with the Sooners optimistically surging ahead behind the promise of the top prospects he attracted. Willie Warren, drawn to play with Griffin a year ago, returns in a more prominent role after being named unanimous Big 12 Freshman of the Year. And McDonald’s All-Americans Keith ‘Tiny’ Gallon and Tommy Mason-Griflin continue the trickle down appeal, as freshmen following Warren to Norman, where basketball fever is brewing.

Oklahoma Backcourt

Focus on these Sooners shifts from the post (where Griffin dominated) to the perimeter.

Warren assumes the go-to tag, a role he’s ready to fulfill after a sidekick gig alongside Griffin a year ago. Even as an understudy Warren compiled one of the most productive freshman seasons in Sooner history, averaging 14.6 points and 3.1 assists, while starting all 34 games.

While inclined to defer to Griffin before, Warren is best with the ball in his hands, creating offense for himself or teammates as a lane-slashing penetrator who can pull up for shots or float them over big men. He also made a team-high 67 3-pointers as a freshman.

Senior Tony Crocker is hoping to build on his best season as a Sooner. Crocker can be a streaky shooter, but he doesn’t back down from big games or moments.

Mason-Griffin offers Capel a true playmaking point guard – something that’s been missing – and projects as an instant starter in an offense that will pick up the pace. Cade Davis and Ray Willis are capable long-range shooters.

Oklahoma Frontcourt

Sure, Griffin will be missed. So will his brother Taylor, a second-round draft pick who offered athleticism and grit.

OU’s frontcourt could be a work in progress. The Sooners suffered an unexpected loss when key reserve Juan Pattillo was dismissed from the squad for violation of team rules. That leaves Orlando Allen and Ryan Wright as the most experienced post men, and neither averaged as much as 10 minutes a game last year.

The lack of proven production makes it imperative that Gallon doesn’t flinch when thrown into the spotlight. One of the nation’s top big-man recruits, Gallon comes with routed offensive skills, having led all scorers with 20 points in the McDonald’s All-American Game. And he looks the part, at 6-9, 300 pounds.

Two more freshmen – 6-8 Andrew Fitzgerald and Kyle Hardrick – could be thrown into the mix for depth.

2009-2010 Oklahoma Predictions

Clearly, while the focus of the team will shift outside, the microscope will be concentrated on OU’s middle.

Allen, Wright, Fitzgerald and especially Gallon must produce for the Sooners to continue as a contender.

The roster is heavy on youth and/or inexperience, leaving little wiggle room in case of injury or ineffectiveness. Still, if Gallon is as good as advertised and Warren thrives, as expected, the Sooners should be back in the thick of the Big 12 race. Oklahoma Finish in the Big 12: 3rd
