2010-2011 Oklahoma Season Preview

A tumultuous offseason spun so out of control for Sooners coach Jeff Capel, sought a “cleansing” for the program. While the shine hasn’t quite returned, Capel’s overhauled roster, coaching staff and recruiting philosophy represent the first step in washing away memories of a sordid 2009-10. Player and coach defections, following a stumbling season plagued by chemistry issues and inconsistent effort, left Capel with only four scholarship players in the spring. He scrambled to rebuild the roster, adding nine new bodies overall, yet faces an uphill climb back to respectability.

Oklahoma Backcourt

Senior Cade Davis is all that ties the preferred past – the 2009 Elite Eight run – and the future together. Davis, a former sixth man, delivered the rare and few bright moments in last winter’s sagging season, playing with passion while starting 27 of 31 games and averaging 9.9 points. Steven Pledger performed well in a reserve role a year ago and will be asked to become an impact player as a sophomore. The rest of the guards are new, including a scramble at the point. New Orleans transfer Carl Blair was snared when his former program decided to drop to Division III, making him immediately eligible at OU. He’ll be thrown into the starting role, with incoming freshman Calvin Newell needed to assume a backup role. T.J. Taylor, an original Sooner recruit from the November early signing period, will be called on to carry a scoring load, ready or not.

Oklahoma Frontcourt

Andrew Fitzgerald finds himself as the lone experienced big man, after starting 11 games and averaging 4.8 points as a freshman a year ago. It’s time to amp up his development, and fast. Who else contributes – and how much will be determined on the fly when full workouts begin in the fall. Cameron Clark, a 6-6 slashing swingman, is a favorite to earn considerable time. Clark averaged 21 points and 7.5 rebounds as a prep senior. Junior college transfers Nick Thompson and C.J. Washington also figure prominently as more seasoned additions.

2010-2011 Oklahoma Predictions

The Sooners are rebuilding, from the ground up. They’ll project to finish near or at the bottom of the Big 12, with no stars and few players hotly pursued by other programs. Oklahoma Finish in the Big 12: 11th
