2010-2011 Oklahoma State Season Preview

Ford’s first two teams at Oklahoma State have been anything but versatile, leaning heavily on a handful of players, including James Anderson and Obi Muonelo a year ago. Those guys are gone and will be missed, with Anderson, the Big 12 Player of the Year, a firstround draft pick of the San Antonio Spurs. Still, a core of rising returners and five anticipated newcomers offers Ford a chance to play the up-tempo style he prefers.

Oklahoma State Backcourt

The Cowboys can’t just plug in another Anderson. Not hardly. Anderson not only led the team in scoring, he took – and made so many critical shots and bonded the locker room with his unquestioned work ethic and selfless persona. Instead, the Cowboys will try to do a better job packaging points. Four guards owning starting experience return, with Ray Penn, Keiton Page and Fred Gulley all spending time at the point in the past, while Nick Sidorakis is a veteran who’s already been named captain. Penn is key, coming back from a stress fracture under his knee to hopefully take the team’s controls and push the pace. The Cowboys are also counting on instant impact from incoming freshman Markel Brown, who averaged almost 32 points a game in leading Peabody Magnet High to a 41-0 state championship season in Louisiana.

Oklahoma State Frontcourt

Matt Pilgrim and Marshall Moses played significant minutes a year ago, just not a lot of them together. Getting them comfortable as a tandem is a priority. Pilgrim came on late last year after finally getting comfortable following his transfer from Kentucky. He could be a force, figuring to flourish in a move to a faster pace. Moses, after a breakthrough sophomore year, regressed last season with off-the-court issues playing a part. JP Olukemi, a 6-7 small forward, wowed coaches with his practice work against Anderson while sitting out as a redshirt. Junior college transfer Darrell Williams should provide needed bulk inside at 6-8, 245 pounds. And Ford predicts future stardom for freshman Michael Cobbins, who only needs to pack some weight on to his 215-pound frame. Cowboys coaches are hoping a year in the system benefits sophomores Jarred Shaw and Roger Franklin.

2010-2011 Oklahoma State Predictions

In his two seasons at OSU, Ford has restored a March Madness mantra to the program. Now, missing Anderson and Muonelo for the first time does present a challenge. And much more versatile. If Penn stays healthy and Brown stands out as expected, the Cowboys should thrive running in the fast lane, making a third straight NCAA Tournament appearance well within reach. Oklahoma State Finish in the Big 12: 7th
