2010-2011 Oregon State Season Preview

Unlike his famous brother-in-law, Craig Robinson doesn’t have to worry about re-election. After another season that indicated lots of hope, President Obama’s brother-in-law received a contract extension through the 2015-16 season. But now, even Robinson admits it’s time for the Beavers to start taking the next step from mere respectability to actual contention. After his first season, when OSU shocked everyone by going 18-18, the Beavers entered last year with high expectations. But they seemed to fade under the weight, finishing just 14-18 overall (8-10 in Pac-10 play), capped by an embarrassing first-round home loss in the CBI to Boston University. The Beavers lose some key players, namely point-forward Roeland Schaftenaar and the brother guard tandem of Seth and Josh Tarver. Josh was among the best defenders in the Pac-10. But Robinson says this team could be more athletic, and because of that, better.

Oregon State Backcourt

The Tarvers steadied the backcourt in the past few years, but the Beavers still had perplexing problems with turnovers. If they can stay under control, the backcourt duo of senior Calvin Haynes and sophomore Jared Cunningham should cause opponents all kinds of problems. Cunningham was the team’s most efficient scorer a year ago, but had trouble staying on the court due to foul trouble, drawing an unusual amount of charges. Haynes is the team’s best outside shooter and one of its best creators. The Beavers are hoping for a huge dose of immediate help from freshmen Roberto Nelson and Ahmad Starks. The 6-4 Nelson sat out due to academics last year but was a Top100 recruit as a shooting guard two years ago. The 5-8 Starks, from Chicago, may be the most pure point guard on the roster.

Oregon State Frontcourt

OSU’s high-post offense calls for big men adept at passing, and sophomore Joe Burton looks like a perfect fit, if he can slim down a bit. He simply seemed out of shape last season, although he still averaged 4.5 rebounds in just 16 minutes a game. Angus Brandt, a 6-10 Australian, could be the replacement for Schaftenaar, showing a deft shooting touch in some extended minutes late in the season. OSU has high hopes for another Aussie, 6-7 Rhys Murphy, who missed last year due to knee injuries. He could replace Seth Tarver at the top of OSU’s 1-3-1 defense. Daniel Deane and Omari Johnson, more conventional power forward types, return for their senior seasons. Also in the mix are highly touted forward Devon Collier of the Bronx and 6-11 Chris Brown, a May signee out of Sugar Land, Texas.

2010-2011 Oregon State Predictions

The Beavers were regarded as a disappointment in some quarters last year, though expectations were likely a bit too high for a team that had gone winless in conference play the year before Robinson arrived. Expectations figure to be lower this season, in part because the Beavers will be one of the younger teams in the conference with a combination of nine freshmen and sophomores. But Robinson has recruited well, and if some of the youngsters mature quickly and upperclassmen like Haynes play consistently, the Beavers could surprise. Oregon State Finish in the PAC-10: 7th
