2009-2010 Penn State Season Preview

Penn State basketball, like the school’s other sports, yields the spotlight to football, but got its own moment in the sun last spring.

It was not on the game’s biggest stage but it was a big jump for a program that suffers from an identity crisis of sorts.

Convincingly, DeChellis turned around the Nittany Lions’ fortunes to earn Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Penn State defeated four Top 25 teams in a season for the first time since 2001 on its way to a school-record mark of 27-11. The Lions lose only two starters, but one of them is NIT MVP Jamelle Comley. Back, however, is point guard Talor Battle, the Big Ten’s third-leading scorer, who averaged 16.7 points per game as a sophomore.

The departed duo of Comley and guard Stanley Pringle combined to score more than 27 points per game last season, but DeChellis is impressed with an incoming group of players, led by 6-9 forward Sasa Borovnjak and 6-6 guard/forward Bill Edwards.

Penn State Backcourt

Pringle’s experience will be missed, but Battle certainly isn’t a bad guy to lean on. He gained confidence as the season wore on, culminating in Penn State’s 69-62 victory over Baylor in the NIT championship game.

Battle should be ready to take on the challenge of leading an inexperienced group after playing this summer for the USA Junior World Team.

Battle’s influence, will aid others, including sophomores Chris Babb and Cammeron Woodyard. Both showed range as freshmen off the bench.

Incoming recruit Tim Frazier, a freshman guard, has drawn rave reviews from scouting services.

Penn State Frontcourt

No returning frontcourt player averaged double figures last season and only 6-9 Andrew Jones averaged more than 3.3 rebounds.

Jackson and Jones, particularly, stood out in the postseason, turning up their offensive games a notch.

2009-2010 Penn State Predictions

Despite some key losses, there is much room for optimism at Penn State, which returns 53 percent of its scoring and 65 percent of its rebounding from a season of firsts.

Penn State had never beaten Michigan State before last year, but when it finally did, the game took on new meaning after the Spartans reached the NCAA Tournament championship game. Penn State Finish in the Big Ten: 9th
