2010-2011 Providence Season Preview

The first two seasons for Keno Davis at Providence have been mixed. In Year One, the former Drake coach led a veteran Friar team to within a win or three of the NCAAs. Included was an upset of top-ranked Pittsburgh and a decent recruiting haul. Yet any gains were wiped away both in Year Two and in an offseason that was seemingly filled with one off-the-court behavior infraction after another. Davis is left with a team without a clear star or veteran leadership and another large recruiting class needing to make a name for itself. The biggest losses came through the graduation of scoring point guard Sharaud Curry and the dismissal of leading scorer and rebounder Jamine Peterson after an incident in a dorm room. Davis is confident that much of what Curry brought to the table can be replaced. He’s also hopeful that he has enough frontcourt power to cover for Peterson, although that assertion appears questionable.

Providence Backcourt

Davis said he had a major sleeper recruit on his hands when he landed the Brooklynborn Vincent Council and he was right on the money. Council averaged more than 10 points a game, always executed an eye-popping dish or two a game and is as fast an end-to-end guard as there is in the conference. What he didn’t do very well was stay in front of his man and lock down on defense, so that’s now a must. Marshon Brooks began his junior season on fire but hit a bit of a wall as soon as his jumper failed. What Davis wants is more effort on things besides scoring. Two players have a chance to make a major impact in PC’s guard corps. Sophomore Duke Mondy showed he can get hot from the 3-point line, but is still learning where to pick his spots on offense. He was the rare Friar who also showed he can defend Big East players. The leader of the recruiting class is Gerard Coleman, a lefty wing who simply knows how to score. While not a pure shooter, he consistently finds ways to get to the rim and is a fine passer.

Providence Frontcourt

Bilal Dixon sat out the 2009 season and significantly improved his game to the point where he was the best rebounding freshman in the Big East last season. He’ll again be counted on to hit the glass with abandon and hopefully expand his shooting range outside of 10 feet. Getting something out of any frontcourt player besides Dixon will be a challenge. Fifth-year senior Ray Hall hopes to be injury-free for the first time in three seasons. Freshmen Kadeem Batts, Ron Giplaye and Brice Kofane are good gets but may not yet be Big East-ready.

2010-2011 Providence Predictions

Davis has recruited 12 players over the past two seasons to try to inject talent into a program always looking for under-the-radar gems. It’s too early to say just how successful Davis has been, but if Coleman, Batts and Giplaye can follow in the footsteps of Dixon and Council, the Friars may have a core that can surprise. Providence Finish in the Big East: 13th
