2009-2010 Rice Season Preview

If Ben Braun’s first year in Houston could have featured his trademark stingy D, the Owls might have been able to withstand some shaky shooting.

But since Rice was not strong stopping other teams, it was a long debut. And unless things tighten up this season, there won’t be much change in 2009-10.

Leading scorer Rodney Foster, who averaged a modest 12.0 points per game last year, is gone, leaving a quintet of holdovers who scored between eight and nine points per game to lead the attack. There is a chance they could blossom into double-figure scorers, although some work has to be done.

Guards Cory Pflieger and Connor Frizzelle could start by improving their shooting eyes, which led each to succeed less than 40 percent of the time last year, although Pflieger did make 36.2 percent of his 3-pointers. Wing Lawrence Ghoram was a little better (40.3 percent), but he could use an upgrade, too.

The arrival of 6-2 freshman Tamir Jackson should help. He’s a combo guard who scored a lot in high school. Freshman A.J. Holland can hit the three and will also challenge junior Bryan Beasley at the point, while 6-5 newcomer Chris Eversley can take people off the dribble.

The frontcourt needs an immediate boost from 6-7 freshman Arsalan Kazemi, who would like to be known as more than just the first Iranian national to play Division 1 basketball. If he brings the same complete interior game to Rice that he showed as a prep, he’ll quickly overshadow that distinction.

Look for sophomore Lucas Kuipers, who missed the last half of the 2008-09 campaign with a broken wrist, to be a scorer inside and out, while 6-10 Trey Stanton needs to rebound better and become more aggressive in the low post.
