2009-2010 Richmond Season Preview

After winning 20 games and going to the way-under-the-radar College Basketball Invitational for a second straight March, Richmond coach Chris Mooney is aiming for a much better party invitation this upcoming March.

The Spiders are glad to play in the postseason no matter its incarnation, but they’d prefer one of the 65 coveted invites to the Big Dance.

To make that happen, Mooney has considerably upgraded the Spiders’ non-conference schedule, a move designed to improve his team’s RPI and to impress the NCAA selection committee. In addition to its 16-game league slate, Richmond will play name-brand foes Florida, Wake Forest, South Carolina and maybe Missouri this winter.

The Ivy League-educated Mooney is no dummy. He believes his Spiders have the horses to handle this kind of slate or he wouldn’t have agreed to take on all comers. On paper at least, Richmond looks like it should be one of the A-10′s three best teams, along with the conference’s two Ohio schools (Dayton and Xavier).

The Spiders return four starters from last year’s 20-win team – guards Kevin Anderson, a second-team all-league selection last season, and David Gonzalvez, as well as frontcourter players Kevin Smith and Ryan Butler. In Anderson and Gonzalvez, the Spiders have one of the A-10′ s most experienced and explosive starting backcourts.

If that weren’t reason enough to be optimistic, 6-9 junior Dan Geriot – the team’s leading scorer and rebounder in 2007-08 who missed last season with a knee injury – is healthy again. He’s the prototypical big man for Mooney’s Princeton-style offense because of Geriot’s ability to step away from the rim and knock down shots.

Geriot’s healthy return should also keep the Spiders from getting squashed on the backboards, something that occurred on a nightly basis last season with the team’s star big man in street clothes.
