2009-2010 Saint Joseph’s Season Preview

Saint Joseph’s can’t wait to start playing again on Hawk Hill in the new Michael J. Hagan Arena.

The Hawks were just 8-6 while using the Palestra as a home venue. That’s not bad, but historically they have an amazing 319-82 record at home. The new arena has 1,000 more seats than the old one, increasing capacity to 4,200.

The only problem is the Hawks will have to entertain the fans without Ahmad Nivins – the A-10 Player of the Year – and shooting guard Tasheed Carr. They were the team’s top scorers and their departures will likely mean fewer wins than the Hawks are used to this year.

Coach Phil Martelli will look to his backcourt for leadership, with seniors Darrin Govens and Garrett Williamson the keys. Govens is the Hawks’ top returning scorer, having averaged 12.5 points a game last season. He’s a clutch player who’s not afraid to take the big shot.

On the other hand, Williamson has to take and – most importantly – make more shots. Defensively, he’s one of the best players in the conference and usually guards the other team’s top player. He’s also a good floor general, having led the team with 145 assists last season.

In the frontcourt, Idris Hilliard emerged as a factor at both ends of the floor a year ago, averaging 9.2 points and 5.5 rebounds a game, and could be primed for bigger things now. The newcomers could add some pop as Carl Baptiste, Justin Crosgile and Carl Jones could all see immediate minutes.

Jones is particularly intriguing as a point guard with a scorer’s mentality. He probably isn’t ready to be a playmaker yet in Martelli’s system, but he’s a creative scorer who declined offers from teams in nearly every major conference in the country to join the Hawks.
