2010-2011 Saint Joseph’s Season Preview

It would be fair to say the Hawks need to rebound this season – both in the standings and the court. A dreadful minus-8 rebounding margin led to the kind of 2009-10 season that won’t be talked about much when coach Phil Martelli calls it a career. Saint Joseph’s ended a string of nine consecutive winning seasons and was a non-factor in the A-10, which is not something they’re used to around Hawk Hill. The Hawks had to battle to get the last spot in the A-10 Tournament and ended up losing in the first round to Rhode Island. These Hawks should be able to turn things around despite losing two of their best players in Garrett Williamson and Darrin Govens, a pair of double-figure scorers on a team that didn’t exactly light up scoreboards. Martelli will expect to receive some leadership from senior Idris Hilliard, the Hawks’ top returning scorer. Hilliard averaged 10.2 points per game last season and was Saint Joseph’s second leading rebounder at 504 boards a game. Hilliard will be joined by Todd O’Brien, who showed flashes of brilliance and has that rare gift of a fine midrange shot. He also led the team in rebounding, tallying 6.3 per game. In the backcourt, the Hawks have some potential with sophomores Carl Jones and Justin Crosgile. Jones can shoot from distance and doesn’t mind doing it when the game is on the line. He was productive on limited playing time last season – 21.5 minutes per game – but should see those minutes climb quite a bit this season. The newcomers should help Saint Joseph’s build a good foundation. C.J. Aiken and Langston Galloway should receive some quality minutes as freshmen. Aiken, a 6-9 center, led Plymouth Whitemarsh, a high school in the suburbs of Philadelphia, to the PIAA Class AAAA state championship. Aiken averaged 16.9 points, 10 rebounds and 6.5 blocked shots per game his senior year. The issues of last season – rebounding chief among them – are things a quality coach can fix. Count on Martelli to do just that.
