2010-2011 Saint Louis Season Preview

Even the most sanguine Saint Louis fan could not have expected the Billikens to play well into last March. They finished 23-13 in a season in which they were picked by the conference coaches to finish 12th in the Atlantic 10. Instead, Saint Louis finished fourth in the league behind three teams – Temple, Xavier and Richmond – that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, and the Billikens certainly flirted with an invitation to the Big Dance until late in the regular season when they lost to Xavier and Temple in the final two weeks. Junior guard Kwamain Mitchell blossomed into a star in his second season and is joined by junior Kyle Cassity and sophomore Christian Salecich. Darrin Young got a chance to play a combined 15 minutes during Saint Louis’ postseason, and should help now. Junior Paul Eckerle redshirted last season but has ability from long range, as does Cassity. Freshman point guard Jordair Jett is built like a tailback with superior court vision and outstanding passing skills; his only drawback is he isn’t a superior athlete. In the frontcourt, Willie Reed showed flashes of becoming a special player as evidenced by his averages of 12,4 points, 7.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocked shots, and will look to play with more consistency as a junior. Forward Cody Ellis had to sit out the first 12 games while waiting for the NCAA to rule him eligible last season, then averaged 10 points per game and made the A-10′s All-Rookie team. Junior forward Brian Conklin should again provide quality minutes off the bench, and there’s plenty of excitement about the newcomers. Coach Rick Majerus went overseas to sign Rob Loe, the No.1 overall prospect in New Zealand’s 2010 class, who was recruited by Big 12, Big East and ACC schools. The 6-11 Loe brings size and has the skill level to play inside and out. Small forward Dwayne Evans considered Northwestern before signing with Saint Louis. He’s a throwback in that he performs at a high level in a halfcourt setting, especially moving without the ball.
