2010-2011 San Diego State Season Preview

San Diego State expects to win at least 25 games every year, and no less is expected this time in what has the potential to become the best season in school history. The Aztecs pever lack for talent and have one of the best coaches in the West Mourltain West Conference dean Steve Fisher, entering his 12th season. With five starters back~ including’ a potential early departure first-round draft pick in Kawhi Leonard, more than 25 wins should not surprise anyone. If there was a curiosity last season, despite a big build-up off recruiting, it was how good could Leonard be as a freshman? He didn’t look like a freshman, and he certainly didn’t play like one, averaging 9.9 rebounds. Leonard, 6-7, and 225 pounds, is the second-leading returning sophomore rebounder in the country. Leonard brings no element of surprise this season. Neither does the rest of the starting lineup, which is all back from a team that didn’t show much vulnerability a year ago.

San Diego State Backcourt

With so much of the talent concentrated up front, guards D.J. Gay and Chase Tapley were sometimes overlooked. Gay ranked second in minutes played in the Mountain West, starting all 34 games. It was also his job to bring along Tapley at the other guard position. Tapley can only grow after starting half of his games last season. Although he was the only starter to average in singlefigure points, he was a 50-percent shooter. Depth will have to come from the three newcomers: the unrelated Jamaal and LaBradford Franklin, and Santa Clara transfer James Rahon.

San Diego State Frontcourt

In a conference that likes three-guard lineups, San Diego State has a dominant frontcourt. Thanks to 6-8 senior small forward Billy White, Leonard and another brute force in 6-9 senior Malcolm Thomas, the Aztecs often have their way inside. As if that’s not enough, Fisher can send in a wide-body in Brian Carlwell, a 6-11, 297-pound former transfer from Illinois. Leonard made third-year starter White a better player, and Thomas, a local junior college transfer, also made an immediate impact. The Riverside, Calif., product caught the San Diego State staff’s interest early and remained loyal to his first offer. Leonard’s talent harkens to Fisher’s past, but he has never been one to make comparisons with his Fab Five units at Michigan.

2010-2011 San Diego State Predictions

The Aztecs carry the target in the MWC, and this team could easily become Fisher’s best outfit. He was in the process of piecing together a difficult non-league schedule, the kind that can build RPI before heading into conference play. In most years, San Diego State has played just to make the NCAA Tournament. If the Aztecs can get a jump on the RPI early this season, they will be playing for seeding by February and in the Sweet 16 by March.
