2010-2011 San Jose State Season Preview

After five seasons of averaging 10 wins and 20 losses, San Jose State coach George Nessman is ready for a role reversal. How about 20 wins and 10 losses? At first glance, that might not be that big of a stretch. The Spartans were close to a .500 club last year, and they welcome back the best guard tandem in the WAC – preseason Player of the Year Adrian Oliver and fellow senior guard Justin Graham. oliver led the league in scoring last season, his first full season at SJSU after transferring from the University of Washington. The Huskies’ loss turned into the Spartans’ gain as Oliver shot 40.8 percent from beyond the arc. He also is an outstanding free-throw shooter at 88.7 percent and was second on the team in assists with 89. Graham led the way in that category for San Jose State with 149. He was fifth on the team in scoring with 9.4 points a game, leaving Nessman trying to replace the Nos. 2, 3 and 4 scorers, who were lost to graduation or early departure. It means these two will carry a big load, especially since the team figures to be soft as Charmin on the front line. That area was hit particularly hard with the loss of big men Chris Oakes and C.J. Webster, who accounted for 21.9 points and 14.4 rebounds a game a year ago. Among the returnees, the man who shows the most promise down low is junior forward Kyle Thomas. He started four games last year but averaged only a couple of points and rebounds a game. He’ll be asked to do more as the Spartans adjust to life without Oakes and Webster in the paint. The top player in the recruiting class is guard Keith Shamburger. The freshman averaged 21 points during his senior season at Serra High in California and will learn a lot playing time behind Oliver and Graham. Nessman signed a couple of forwards in Wi! Carter and Brylle Kamen, but it appears the Spartans will play small with several players capable of lighting it up from the perimeter. The guards will be good, which means the Spartans will be dangerous if the big men take care of business.
