2010-2011 Seton Hall Season Preview

It didn’t take Kevin Willard long to win over Seton Hall supporters after replacing the fired Bobby Gonzalez as coach. Told that his three best players – Jeremy Hazell, Herb Pope and Jeff Robinson – had applied for early entry to the NBA Draft, Willard thought briefly about what that meant before offering up an observation. That disarming personality should serve the 34-year-old Willard well in the Big East. Hazell, already with 1,789 career points, and Robinson were certainly won over: Both opted to return to schooL Still unknown is the future of Pope, the Big East’s leading rebounder last season, who collapsed during a late April workout and was rushed to the hospital, where he spent a month recuperating. He withdrew from the draft but had not been cleared to play by the school’s medical personnel as of press time.

Seton Hall Backcourt

Hazell became the first Pirate in 32 years to average 2o-plus points two straight years thanks to the free rein he was given by Gonzalez. It will be interesting to see whether Willard tries to reel in the free-wheeling senior. Junior Jordan Theodore, a part-time starter at the point, gets the position full-time, and with a bonus: Willard hired Shaheen Holloway, a popular ex-point guard star for the Pirates, as his top assistant. Senior Keon Lawrence offers a change of pace with his speed and athleticism at the point. Classmate J amel Jackson will be counted on to be more consistent from the perimeter than he was last year. Willard added 6-6, 220-pound wing Eniel Polynice, a transfer from Ole Miss, in July. Polynice, who averaged 8.8 points per game last year, has applied for a waiver to be eligible immediately because he graduated from the SEC school and is taking a graduate school course Mississippi did not offer.

Seton Hall Frontcourt

Pope’s health holds the key to the frontcourt – and perhaps to the season. With the Big East’s leading rebounder, the Pirates can entertain NCAA Tournament hopes. Without him, they’re too small and too young and Pope’s medical status may not be known until just before the season. No Pope means Robinson – the Memphis transfer who came on strong late – will have to shoulder most of the inside burden. His supporting help would come from sophomore Ferrakohn Hall and a trio of freshmen. Two of the newcomers – Patrik Auda and Anali Okoloji – were late signees by Willard. Auda, a good 3-point shooter, spent last year playing in the Canary Islands. The 6-8 Okoloji will help in the post. Freshman swingman Fuquan Edwin arrives with the skills and scoring ability to have an immediate impact. He was recruited by Gonzalez, but chose to honor his commitment when Willard got the job.

2010-2011 Seton Hall Predictions

Can one player really make that much of a difference? He can if he’s an impact post player and relentless rebounder, as Pope is. With the 6-8 junior, the Pirates can flirt with an NCAA bid. If Pope isn’t cleared medically to play, this suddenly becomes an undersized, rebound-challenged NIT hopefuL The Pirates have quality Big East players in Hazell, Robinson and Theodore. But they need Pope to put them over the top.
