2010-2011 South Florida Season Preview

When South Florida opened its season with a road victory at SMU, no one expected the Bulls to pile on 19 more wins for only the third 20-win season in school history. When the Bulls lost their first four Big East games, no one expected them to recover and finish .500 in the conference for the first time and advance to the postseason for the first time in eight years. This season’s outlook would have been much more promising if All-Big East guard Dominique Jones returned to school, but his NBA stock was high enough for him to make the leap. The Bulls also lost seniors Chris Howard, Mike Mercer, Ryan Kardok and Alex Rivas, but forward Augustus Gilchrist, center Jarrid Famous and forward Toarlyn Fitzpatrick provide a strong nucleus to build around. One of the biggest issues for the Big East’s smaller programs – those brought in for football concerns – is to maintain basketball traction. And so it is for USF this season.

South Florida Backcourt

Losing point guard Chris Howard is not as significant as the loss of Jones, but it stings nonetheless. Anthony Crater gets first crack at point guard but has to shoot it better from long range, and freshman LaVonte Dority will also get a long look and could be the fulltime starter. Despite the improved record, the Bulls’ 3-point shooting percentage went down from 29.7 to 28.3 percent, which was the worst in the Big East. South Florida was one of only two league teams – Cincinnati was the other – to shoot under 30 percent from beyond the arc. Coach Stan Heath’s pet project in the offseason was to find 3-point shooters and defenders and he may have them in Shaun Noriega and Mike Burwell.

South Florida Frontcourt

If anything prevented South Florida from making the NCAA Tournament a year ago it was an injury to Gilchrist, who missed IS games with an ankle sprain. South Florida won eight of those games, but there was always a sense that Gilchrist’s presence was missed. A stunning three-point loss to Central Michigan and a one-point loss to Notre Dame occurred in his absence – two games that might have put the Bulls into the NCAA Tournament. But with Gilchrist healthyscoring and rebounding – and Famous back for his senior season, the Bulls have enough beef up front to cause problems. Other faces in the rotation will be Kansas State transfer Ron Anderson, Jr., who will see time at power forward and center, and sophomore Fitzpatrick, who played well in a starting role when Gilchrist was injured. Hugh Robertson, rated as the nation’s NO.2 junior college prospect as a swingman, joins the Bulls after two seasons at Tallahassee CC where the 6-5, 195-pounder averaged 11.6 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.1 assists in 31 games.

2010-2011 South Florida Predictions

The school is building a multi-court practice facility adjacent to the Sun Dome and there also are plans to renovate the aging Dome, part of $33 million in facility upgrades the school is making in the coming year. On the court, there’s no way to replace J ones or the scoring he provided. The Bulls, however, have good depth up front, but a lot needs to go right for them to maintain their momentum. South Florida Finish in the Big East: 12th
