2009-2010 Southern Miss Season Preview

Most coaches would call this a rebuilding year, but not Larry Eustachy. Entering his 19th season as a head coach and sixth at Southern Miss, Eustachy thinks the Eagles could be ready for a breakout in a Conference USA that is experiencing a power vacuum like it hasn’t seen in several years thanks to John Calipari – and all his super-recruits leaving Memphis for Kentucky.

The Eagles will have to make up for the loss of double-digit scorers Jeremy Wise, Courtney Beasley and Craig Craft who combined to pump in more than 41 points per game. But a couple of Division 1 transfers should help ease the transition and Eustachy already knows he has one guy who can put points on the board.

R.L. Horton, a point guard last year, will slide over to shooting guard now in hopes of making up for some of the scoring loss. Moving an established point guard isn’t an easy decision, but the new players coming in made it an obvious one for Southern Miss as the new playmaker is former Southern California starter Angelo Johnson.

Johnson was mainly an effective backup and 3-point shooter while with the Trojans, but did start 11 games on a team that included O.J. Mayo and Daniel Hackett. He left USC when coach Tim Floyd wouldn’t promise him a starting spot following Mayo’s departure. Well, he’s not in Los Angeles anymore … but he’ll start in Hattiesburg.

Daryl Arnold is the other transfer, though his role is less defined after he averaged just more than 14 minutes and four points at Southeastern Louisiana.

Also new to the rotation is Gary Flowers, a 6-8, 215-pound power forward from Chipola Junior College in Florida where he averaged 12 points and seven rebounds per game for one of the top JC programs in the nation.
