Southern Miss Coach: Larry Eustachy – At Southern Mississippi: 96-94, 6 years; overall; 356-239, 19 years

Southern Miss Players to Watch: Gary Flowers didn’t even flirt with the NBA after last season and returns as one of the league’s most productive big men at both ends of the floor.

2010-2011 Southern Miss Season Preview

When Larry Eustachy says that “this will be our best team,” it’s hard not to believe him. When a team returns its top six scorers from a 20-14 season and welcomes a recruiting class that includes a few players who should make immediate contributions, it has the potential for big things. Eustachy’s dream is to have the Reed Green Coliseum rocking every night, and the Golden Eagles might just create the excitement necessary for that to happen this year. USM reached the C-USA semis last year and the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament. It played some nasty defense and hammered the boards. It forced a bunch of turnovers and blocked plenty of shots. But if the Golden Eagles are to make a giant step toward contention, they must shoot better and cut back on turnovers. It’s one thing to make life difficult for opponents, but having a small margin for error is no way to succeed in a big way. The Golden Eagles received some good news when senior forward Gary Flowers did not enter the NBA Draft. He’ll serve as the frontcourt focus and is solid at both ends. The question is whether he’ll have the support of heralded recruit Rashad Perkins, Mississippi’s Mr. Basketball. The 6-6 Perkins enrolled at junior college this summer in order to clear up eligibility issues and hopes to be at USM in the fall. If he isn’t, it’s up to senior Josimar Ayarza to improve his production inside. Perhaps 6-10 guard Maurice Bolden will work in the paint more, too, and reserve Torye Pelham can bang some, too. USM is well stocked in the backcourt, beginning with point man Angelo Johnson, a junior who distributes well but must shoot better. Senior R.L. Horton is a combo guard who can get his shot, but like Johnson, must make more of them. Senior Sai’Quon Stone is solid off the dribble but must finish better. A pack of newcomers should provide firepower. JC wing Carrington Tankston can fill it up and freshman Trency Jackson is good off the dribble. Freshman Cedric Jenkins is a scoring point, while JC wing LaShay Page is a longrange marksman.
