2009-2010 St. Bonaventure Season Preview

Admit it, you thought this program was dead. You weren’t alone. Picked to finish last in the Atlantic 10 last season, the Bonnies instead went 15-15 and earned a trip to the A-10 Tourney for the first time since 2005.

And Mark Schmidt’s squad figures to be even better in 2009-10.

The reason? Schmidt has a budding star in 6-9 sophomore pivot Andrew Nicholson, the 2009 Atlantic 10 Newcomer of the Year. After being under-recruited out of Canada, in part because an ankle injury limited his activity in the summer before his senior year of high school, Nicholson led all D-1 freshmen in blocked shots (2.7 per game, 11th in the
nation) and field-goal percentage (60.2 percent, 12th nationally).

Nicholson will miss his inside tag-team partner – 6-8 Maurice Thomas – who was jettisoned from the program, along with backup point guard Ray Blackburn. But Schmidt believes 6-8 redshirt freshman Marquise Simmons and 6-9 sophomore Da’Quan Cook will combine to replace Thomas’ in-the-paint toughness and production.

Even without Blackburn, the perimeter seems well-stocked as Jonathan Hall, a 6-5 JC gem who led the Bonnies in scoring, rebounding and assists, is back. Fellow guard Chris Matthews never met a shot that he didn’t think he could make. He hoisted a team-high 246 3-pointers last season – no, that’s not a typo – and must be a little more selective before pulling the trigger this winter.

The addition of 6-4 slasher Lewis Leonard, a junior college scoring machine who redshirted last season, gives the Bonnies even more perimeter pop. Schmidt addressed his team’s Achilles heel (too many turnovers) on the recruiting trail when he dipped into the JC ranks again to land highly touted point guard Ogo Adegboye.
